Here's the cover I scanned myself from my own copy.

Well, if by default they're not showing, they're probably not that forced, especially on Power DVD.

I have the exact same copy. You're watching it on a computer which is able to override the UOP (user operation override) feature that is employed on Blu-rays to lock out the user from altering settings during playback, hence the term "forced" subtitles.

Have you actually got a regular player hooked up to a TV to check it, just to humor me?

And by "forced" I mean "forced", I can't turn them off, not via the menu and not manually via remote. DVD Compare also backs this up, FWIW: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparison...hp?fid=11797#4

Also referenced on this forum's own forced French subs list: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=192986

Not all players are programmed the same. Some can override disc commands (at least this was my understanding of dvds, pretty sure BD plays the same way) like letting you skip trailers and turn subs on and off while watching, others do not. I found with dvd, the cheaper the player, the more free it was.

Some cheaper no-name players implement playback thru a PC drive and software rather than a hardware SoC solution which is why they can get around stuff like this. But Danny's already made it quite clear he's watching it on a computer, not a standalone TV/player.

Funnily enough, I've got custom firmware for my own Panasonic 310 player which allows for deactivation of UOP so I can remove the subs on the French Zombie if I so wish. (I do, I do!) If I turn off the custom firmware, the subs can't be removed when playing back with English audio.

I don't think a French forced subs thread would even exist if people could just turn off the subs manually, but now it seems like I'm the only man on Earth who seems to have experienced them. Ever.

Just in case I'm misremembering (along with this other poor soul) I turned off the custom firmware and tried it again. Yep, both the HD Argento and SD theatrical cut on the 2009 disc have forced subs which I can't deactivate on my Panny player. YMMV.

Sorry guys, busy at work.

Before someone comes up and tells me I shouldn't use Power DVD as a player I will clarify that I never use Power DVD to watch movies on my computer. I used to use it to emulate a standalone TV/player but that's it. This why the video I made this morning was shot with me using Power DVD as I thought it would act as a standalone TV/player.

Here's my rig:

- AnyDVD HD to remove Region protection. When I receive a Blu-ray, the first thing I do is that I make a 1:1 .iso to my harddrive using AnyDVD HD then shelve the physical Blu-ray.
- My player is Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC)
- My renderer is madVR since it's 3D LUT capable and fully implemented in LightSpace.
- I use a BT. 709 3D calibration LUT generated from LightSpace LTE (£525.00)
- My monitor is a Flander Scientific Inc. LM-2461W (24") ($4995)

Basically, I'm watching movies on a DaVinci Resolve Color Correction rig.

Does anyone know about the XT Entertainment releases that came out in Austria? Apparantly they have the same transfers as the Happinet BD's.

I've looked at screencaps on caps-a-holic and the discs actually look alright. Plus the motion smearing that's on the Anchor Bay & Arrow BD's doesn't seem to be present on them.

The answer to your question can be found here. Look in the --Releases-- section. The screenshots on caps-a-holic are from the older (2011) NSM Records releases not from the 2014 XT Video / NSM Records. This page my clear things up regarding all those Austrian Blu-ray releases.

Cheers man that's really helped clear things up.

What's this european cut that's been given a new 4K restoration? Is that the Argento cut?

I've mentioned in the UK Dawn thread that I've got the XT Theatrical digibook, it looks so much better than the Arrow/AB discs in my opinion. It has it's issues with blown out contrast in some scenes and such but it looks much more organic and unmolested in comparison.

^ Ah, I thought that might've been the case. AnyDVD has an option to remove UOP/PUO which I'm presuming is being applied to your rips (can you skip or FF thru all the copyright warnings?). If so, that's why you're not getting the forced subs on playback even though you've got a 1:1 iso of the disc itself and are playing it back in software that otherwise approximates the functions of a set top player.

So while it's doing most of what a standalone player would, and with a 1:1 clone of the disc, the rip itself has circumvented those UOP/PUO controls which are what forces the subs on actual players. Make sense? It probably goes without saying, but not everyone's got a rig like that Danny!!

Oh how I'd love for the theatrical cut to get a new 4K transfer.

Maybe one day.

Hey Geoff, you're probably right, AnyDVD must remove all those annoying things nobody wants.

Yes, damn this software for removing these annoying things without telling us!

And I'm not meaning to knock you down at all, your site is a fabulous resource for all things Dawn related, but just bear in mind that someone with a pitiful portable picnic player of a system *might* not have the same experience as you with [whatever] disc.

Something tells me that in order to do the stereoscopic conversion of Dawn of the Dead 3D, they probably restored the Theatrical Cut in 4K from the Original Camera Negative. This is just a feeling.

Hey if some company wants to do a 3D conversion and it means getting a new pristine transfer in 2D in the process then convert away.

This is also the sentiment with the new 3D conversion of Terminator 2
