Unhappy Why Your New HDTV is Already History

While searching for a TV to buy, I ran across these articles.
I guess I'm supposed to be patient...

can anyone direct me to HDMI 1.3 compatible TV's (please)? i'm having a hard time finding one... (my sleuthing skills are amateur)

I wish I could help, but I don't know any HDMI 1.3 compatible TVs. It's a good question.

Question ...

there have to be some out there...and by the way, do you think with the release of hdmi 1.3 compatible TVs that the current 1.1 models will plummet in price?

I bought a Samsung HL-T6189S a month or two back from ABT in Chicago for $2400 (MSRP $3200). It is a 1080p, 61 inch, DLP (rear projection), HDTV with HDMI 1.3. This is a brand new line that runs off an LED light engine and is considered "thin" for rear projection TVs. I have it hooked up to a PS3 (HDMI 1.3), Wii, and an Onkyo 605 (HDMI 1.3) that I bought from JRs for $400 (MSRP $600) about a week or two back. That is the best I could do, as far as 1.3 is concerned. Everything looks and sounds amazing. I am a huge NIN fan so when their BD Beside You In Time came out, I had to get it. So I got all this stuff so I could see and hear it the best possible way. It was worth every penny. Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the CONTENT have to support the 1.3 standard to get anything worthwhile out of it?

Your HDTV need not have HDMI 1.3 to fully enjoy BD.

However, if you're an avid amateur videographer/pornographer with a 1080i/p x.v.Color/xvYCC videocamera a HDTV that can support that format would be beneficial to you. It'll give you a wider color gamut (not deeper) than regular HD camera.

In the future, maybe there will be HDTVs that can take the 5.1 PCM audio signal direct from a player to play it in stereo, but that it may also pass it through to a HDMI receiver. With this setup, you don't need to turn on the receiver to watch your BD at 4 AM.

All I have is a HDMI 1.0 or 1.1 TV (I really don't know which one it is) and the picture is great with my PS3!

Huh, the article is just dumb. 8 bit color? Does anyone know what 8 - bit color is?

set your desktop to 8-bit color. That's only 256 colors. VCDs have a larger color palete than that.

32-bit color allows 16 million colors which is supported by DVI. HDMi is DVI with audio

Unles they ment a 8-bit interface for 1.2. This means data travels in 8-bit wide sequences. HDMI 1.3 suports a 16 bit interface for color thus doubling the data bandwith for color.

By the time you get all excited to buy into the hype that is HDMI 1.3, you'll be hearing about all the advantages of HDMI 1.4. Better technology comes every year. There's always something new just around the corner.

Just buy something and be happy with it.

There are two ways that color bit depth is reported. You are referring to the way that HDTV manufacturers report the bit depth of their displays, which only lists the bit depth of one of the 3 primary colors used in the display technology (red, green and blue) which is why the number is small. Do not confuse this with the bit depth settings that you would find in your computer's "display settings" which reports the bit depth of all primary colors.

An HDTV with "8-bit color" is actually the equivalent of selecting "24-bit" in your PC's "display settings". The newer "10-bit" HDTV's are the equivalent of choosing "32-bit" in a PC's display settings.

Keep in mind that all but a select few PC monitors are only 24-bit (or 8-bit) monitors. (32-bit monitors are mostly high end monitors targeted at CAD design). Most people who select "32-bit" in the windows display settings are not seeing any difference than selecting "24-bit".

Very few people have actually experienced the color depth that these next gen 10-bit (xvcolor/deepcolor) HDTVs will offer, and very few if any of todays sources (DVD, HDDVD, Blu-ray) will have the massive color information that would take advantage of these displays.

To go through the points from the article:

Quote:
Why is HDMI 1.3 better than 1.2: A number of specifications are mentioned on the HDMI.org FAQ section. In short, it has a faster bandwidth of 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) for any higher resolution HDTV that may come along.
Okay, so the 1.3 interface can support higher resolutions than 1080p. Therefore if you buy a 1080p TV with a 1.3 interface you are gaining precisely zero benefit from this improvement.

Quote:
There is also the "deep color" feature that allows 10 to 16-bits of color depth. Prior versions of HDMI allowed up to 8-bits. HDMI 1.3 also has more color space that allows nearly an unlimited variety of colors to be viewed.
This is the only real improvement, but most panels currently can't even fully display 8 bits per channel let alone 10-16. Plus as has been noted already, content would need to be created in this format. So again, if you buy a TV in a few months that has a 1.3 interface, but still has a panel that can't even display 256 distinct levels per channel, you have gained zero benefit from this improvement.

Quote:
Another interesting feature is "lip sync" which bridges the gap between audio and video display limitations that make dialogue and picture seem out of synchronization. The newly compressed "lossless" audio formats such as Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio(tm) are fully compatible to HDMI 1.3.
Only of interest to people who play the sound through their TV rather than an amp/receiver. Most TVs surely won't have good enough sound quality for the lossless codec support to have any relevance.
