I'll be getting this one too.

Nobody is mentioning HDR for this '90s movie. Do you want it or not? I hope the additional range was on the film negative.

Also, I'm guessing this being a mid-90s movie, they used some digital compositing for the vfx? Probably with low-res (for today) scanning of plates. Some shots might look like a rough upscale? But remember, it was shown on movie theaters that way too, anyway.

That's a tough question. A lot of the CGI in this movie is very blatant even at standard definition. Will be interesting to see.

There was a ton of model work, more than CG

Now if Fox would only release the great TRUE LIES and THE ABYSS on 4K UHD blu ray...
INDEPENDENCE DAY is day one for me! This should look awesome and hoping by then Fox will have re-recorded the soundtrack in 7.1 and Dolby Atmos (not holding my breath on the Dolby Atmos).

Noticed this elsewhere.... during a Q&A with Fox Studios. Basically don't hold your breath could be a couple of years.

Q: What is the status of The Abyss, True Lies and Strange Days on Blu-ray and/or UHD.

A: Jim Cameron is very involved, careful and engaged on how the films should look. He wants his versions to be definitive so he never has to revisit them again. Fox is VERY ready for him, but the Director is very busy with Avatar at the moment.

At this point I'm sure they'll just go ahead and release those on UHD as well. I highly doubt that any release would be BD only.

That's what I thought too. Some of it looks great and some of it looks downright funny (canyon chase, I'm looking at you).

But the thing is, did they use digital compositing? And is that a problem? I remember in the early 90s you could often tell those shots because black levels were funky, grain was like noise... Well I'm sure they'll make it look as seamless as possible. It must already be like that on the blu-ray too. But it's been ages since I've seen this anywhere.

I also remember this movie had a 1.85 AR trailer. I can't remember for sure how the movie itself looked on the theater, but it's always been 2.35 on home video so I guess there's nothing to that.

Given there is no standard to calibrate for HDR (and nothing seemingly on the horizon), I would be concerned if it is an HDR release. I know 99% of people don't care about proper calibration and how a disc is supposed to look, but I do.

Dolby Atmos is highly unlikely, since this is a Fox title. I could see a DTS-HD MA 7.1 track, though, and maybe, DTS:X.

This film heavily used miniatures and model work. A lot of the effects come off as rather rough now, not because they used miniatures and models, but how they used them and integrated them into the scenes. Some of the shots still look outstanding. Other shots, not so much. That scene with the dog jumping to safety as the fireball races through the tunnel looks dreadful, as do many other shots. A lot of the destruction scenes are rough-looking. This was always a rather rough-looking film effects-wise. One shot looks outstanding, the next shot is sloppy.

Some of the effects work is down-right lazy, too. The explosion when Randy Quaid slammed his plane into the mothership's doomsday weapon during the finale battle is just one of the explosions earlier in the film during the initial destruction scene - they just flipped the explosion upside-down and integrated it into the shot. Lots of cheap tricks like this were used.

One shot I always hated was the money shot of the white house that was used extensively in all the trailers. It was, and still is, an outstanding miniature effects shot, except the shot we see in the film is different from what was shown in the trailers. In the trailers, we see a clear view of the building as it is destroyed by the doomsday weapon - in the final film, they added an additional visual layer of a helicopter exploding in front of the white house lawn, hiding a good portion of the white house shot behind it. I always hated that they chose to do that. The original shot in the trailers looks far better because you can see the entire explosion without being covered up by another explosion in front of it.

IGN has a lot of details tonight on a 20th Anniversary Blu-ray, but no mention of 4K.

Doesn't mean it's not coming out though. Fox is the studio most enthusiastic about UHD and I don't see why they wouldn't have another SKU of the UHD. Of course unless they decided not to regrade this with HDR.

I'm going to guess that the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray will be included in the 4K package, and that all the extras will be retained on the Blu-ray and that the UHD disc will be barebones as most UHD releases have been so far.

Why do film 4K scanning of 35mm from Independent Day to downscale remastered 4K BDs is 2K?

I feel will on UltraHD 4K in future.

I've never seen the extended cut. It'd be pretty cool to see it in 4K!

I consider I like the movie. I talk about Independent Day on Bluray combos DVD and digital.

Why? Why not on UHD 4K?

Fox told HTF several months back that only the remastered Blu-ray would be coming this year and not the UHD BD (same goes for the upcoming The Omen remaster).
