Do you have to be familiar with the character to enjoy the movie?

Yes, but Hellboy had some pretty good word-of-mouth and Guillermo del Toro, at the helm.

Even yourself have admitted that Lobo at PG-13 would be severely gimped and I think that will certainly negatively affect the word-of-mouth aspect of it.

It'll be interesting to see how Ritchie transitions from a British Ganster flick to a comic book character.

I'm not saying that it'll be bad, but it seems fairly limited compared to what the character is portrayed as in the comics.

Even with Ritchie at the helm.

I didn't hear any word of mouth on Hellboy before I saw it and I had no idea who Guillermo del Toro was at the time. Most people don't know who he is, or if they do, probably know of him only as the guy who will be doing The Hobbit.

Hit the sweet spot with fans and word of mouth can be good. For example, Ryan Reynolds's appearance in Wolverine got praise all over the place in spite of being PG-13. Now, we all know that the character's later appearance in the film wasn't regarded quite so highly, but the point is that a violent character can exist within a PG-13 space and still be seen as successful portrayal by the fans.

And hey, they could aim for PG-13 in theaters then put out "uncut" R for home video. It's not uncommon.

I did, but then I had heard of the Hellboy character {and read some of the comics} before they were in production so I was keeping an eye out for some of the news with regards to it.

True, but the fans of Lobo tend to lean more towards the 'R' rated crowd.

Some might be willing to give it a chance, but lessening the rating in order to put more butts in the seats might hurt in the long run.

Time will tell though.

They could, but I haven't seen too many PG-13 movies in theaters have an 'unrated' DVD that have done incredibly well in home video compared to what happened in theaters.

I think Zack snyder should do this film, since he did so well recreating comic books with 300 and Watchmen, and the last one was splicit enough (at list on the DC, didnt see it on cinemas)

But oh well, lets just cross fingers

Just saw Sabotage today and thought that Joe Manganiello would be perfect to play Lobo!

Danny Trejo should play Lobo but they'll probably just give it to someone like The Rock

I read an article that WB is thinking of doing Lobo again due to success of Deadpool. I still say cast Joe Manganiello as Lobo, and they can also have Guy Gardner show up, and also due to people supposedly getting sick of superheroes, they can also have Goldstar appear - an annoying do-gooder superhero that Lobo always beats up. This would be as close as possible to copying the Deadpool model.

Lol over 1 billion for TDK trilogy alone. Add the original Superman movies, the 1st 2 Batman movies etc. DC only has a few flops.

The Rock is already cast in the DCU as Black Adam in the Shazam movie.

and therein lies the problem. A movie can't be successful anymore without spawning a list of copycats and wannabes.

Well they certainly cant go dark with Lobo or else we have another Punisher or Ghost Rider film - A Lobo movie must be funny, especially with Lobo's love of violence. An R-rated action fantasy comedy will inevitably make audiences think of Deadpool.

If his contract allowed it, Chris Hemsworth would be a great Lobo - with his presence and his ability to be funny, he would make a great Lobo, and it would be a different role than his usual ones.

Jason Momoa would have been a perfect Lobo, but alas, it cannot be

Had this movie been released after Sin City, Mickey Rourke would have been a good Lobo too.
