Yeah, I remember seeing it on a bluray insert. Forget which one and I tend to throw that stuff away.

No, a Blu-ray for Black Cauldron has never been officially announced or teased unfortunately. Disney has kept quiet about any kind of release for that film, that's why everyone's losing their minds - it's time for it to be released.

There was some kind of anniversary DVD not too long ago. Perhaps that's what you're confusing it for.

Im just gonna grab the Black Cauldron DVD in a month or so since it seems this may never get a BD at this rate.

Yeah, every time they do sales on Disney DVD at our local retailer (buy 1 get one free / buy 2 get one free / buy 3 for $30 etc.) I'm so tempted to just grab it and the package films and get it done. But I've held off so far.

I ended up caving on the 90s live-action titles though, and splashed out on all my faves (Parent Trap, 101 Dalmatians, Flubber, Man of the House etc. etc.) because, at this rate, there's no way they're hitting blu. Ever.

I'm just so glad for the DMC releasing all of those live-action classics

Don't know if this has been posted (no need to link me if so) but Disney is doing a live action version:
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.co...prydain-movie/
which pretty much all but guarantees we'll get a BD release of The Black Cauldron; I just hope we don't have to wait years and years if this is in the early development phase.

From what I have read they haven't even decided if it will be live action or animated.

Disney making new series from the Chronicles of Prydain...means Jeffrey Katzenberg becomes new CEO, cuts all the scary parts out of the movie at the last minute trying to maintain a G rating.

When Disney will replace its restoration team with people who actually respect the movies?
This is what I'd like to know.

Save for a few botched transfers (Sword in the Stone, Mickey's Christmas Carol), Disney's restorations have been mostly spectacular - I'm not too sure where this comment comes from...

Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Fantasia, The Lion King, The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Aristocats, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver & Company come to mind.

Most of those titles you've mentioned were from the "Xerox" period, and the quality of the images aren't great to start with.

I'll give you Mouse Detective, Robin Hood and Fox and the hound. But there was nothing wrong with the transfers of the others.

I especially have no idea how you've come to think Fantasia, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Peter Pan had terrible conversions... I don't know what television you watched these on, but those transfers are some of the most spectacular restorations Disney have done for blu.
The former three of which have a 5/5 Video rating on this very site (save Fantasia which had its rating brought down to a 4 because of the Fantasia 2000 transfer). Even Cinderella sits at a 4/5 and Peter Pan 4.5/5

There are a lot of shit reviews on this site. The problem with the Disney animated Blu-rays is they're revisionist and not good representations of the works as films.

The problem is that all those Disney Blurays are degrained leaving out the cinematic quality and all the brush strokes and details and resembling nothing the original films as they were projected in theaters. (let alone the rotoscoping, repainting, making thicker lines, making new digital effects to replace the old ones since they were ruined by their "restoration" process)

here's how a real restoration should be:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-L...5/#Screenshots

and here's a comparison of HDTV to Bluray of Lady and the tramp (don't pay attention to the AR change):
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comp....php?id=109823

here's another comparison in Aristocats and how the degraining affects the image. Of course the terrible results are more evident in motion:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/166064
In every area - in the bluray - you have a uniform color (like a flash animated video) which doesn't change as the frames change.
But in the original frames the colors had life and were changing constantly due to the different brush strokes and grain, creating little fluctuations.

As for Cinderella that you mention, well, it's actually very funny but the VHS (!!!) has more detail than the Bluray!!!!
[Show spoiler]

making the films look like lifeless cheap TV shows is not a restoration!
It's revision at its worst!

The only ones that somehow managed to escape that fate (judging from the screenshots) are The Rescuers, The Rescuers down under, The Great Mouse Detective, The Fox and The Hound and The Little Mermaid.
Nothing else!

Now, DNR is considered a terrible practice in live-action films.
I don't understand why it shouldn't be considered too in animation films.

You're kidding right? A crappy old transfer is NOT a restoration.

Pulling selected frames here and there is disingenuous since the entire transfer does not look like that. You guys tried to pull the same shenanigans with Sleeping Beauty.

No, it's errors in Xerography and noise and inconsistencies in old telecines and limited color reproduction! I have a cel from The Aristocats that we got from Disneyland in the early 1970s. It looks like the BD.

Because the cels didn't have film noise & dust!

Stop thinking the old video transfers represent how they should look. They are a product of their time. It's like romanticizing an old scratchy record with squashed dynamics and hiss is somehow how it's supposed to sound.
