The new art in and of itself looks good. If they are going to use it as a cover though, i wish they would at least paint it in instead of line art in just a few colors. If not, then i would rather they use the original poster art.

Terrible placement of the blu-ray logo.

I'll definitely be replacing it with Nissen's awesome custom cover.

I'm sorry, I'm pretty sure it's my fault. Paramount is determined to never give me what I want -- the original theatrical version of Undiscovered Country in something better than a non-anamorphic DVD.

Why 4K scanner film is improving to downscales 1080p. Small picture.

I have a theory, 2160p is more pixels and 4 times sharper than 1080p is less pixels can't bigger picture.

Ah, damn. What did they change in that version? That means my old VHS copy wasn't even the theatrical either.

Edit: Nevermind. Found a comment on Amazon that gives the differences.

Not a fan of that cover art. Definitely agree the original poster art used for last year's steelbook is far superior.

Love the Mondo cover, would be cool if Paramount has reverse covers, like Arrow do for their releases. Mondo on one side and classic cover on the reserve.
Hope this sells well enough for the others films to be released. As they have started with TWOK, stands to reason that 3 and 4 will be next to complete the trilogy

Content wise, this looks like a great release. Can't say I'm too pleased with that artwork though... would have much preferred the original poster artwork.

Okay, thanks. So looking into this a bit more, around 2011 the Scanity HDR scanner was introduced and it uses a new sensor and LED light source which is capable of capturing a dynamic range of 3.3 film density, whereas scanners before 2011 could only capture around 2.3. Apparently, the best modern Kodak Vision 3 film stock today is capable of about 3.1 film density of dynamic range.

Thing is, though, Star Trek II was shot on one of the first "high-speed" film stocks in 1981, Fuji A 250T 8518 to be precise. I'm not sure that old stock was capable of that kind of expanded dynamic range which these new breed of scanners can handle. Remember that 1981 is about a decade before the introduction of innovations like better color separation and tabular grain. Sounds like overkill if that's what Paramount chose to re-scan the film on, but who am I to tell them how to spend their money?

The more the merrier, I guess. Can't hurt anyway.

...that thing is freaking gorgeous.

Why would you have to give up the steelbook? Keep it and put the new disc in it or just keep it simply to have it. Theres no reason to get rid of it just becauae a new version is coming out.

I believe its because when the first bluray's came out years back Star Trek 2 out of all of them was in the worst condition. It had to have money spent on a full restoration. It's easy for them to do a 4k re-scan on the restored version and thus do another re-release.

To do 4k scans of all the other movies would require additional money being spent on restoration. It's also a cost effective way for them to test the market and if it sells well they will invest what is needed to get the other films cleaned up, re-scanned and prepped for 4k release. Star Trek 2 had half the work done already which is why I guess it was chosen.

I will probably just swap this disc for the one in the collection set so the cover art doesn't matter much for me.

There's some wonderful Bob Peak alt art they could've used if they wanted a new cover. I'm really not a fan of Mondo art, I think for the most part it's really tacky.

Well, that's a Bob Peak poster. It also happens to be one of the rarest, most sought-after and iconic classic posters of the 80's. But there's no accounting for taste I suppose...
