I'm pretty sure Bastards is Claire Denis.

According to a reply on their Twitter account, they're only going to be streaming in the U.S. for now, but they will be passing feedback for interest in other countries (Canada, Europe)

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but does anyone know if Polanski's Venus in Fur is going to be released by Criterion? I could have sworn I heard a rumor about this a year or two ago.

Sorry that I can't answer your question, but I just wanted to say that I thought it was a very good film. Very provocative and interesting. That would be great if they did release it.

Canceled my Hulu this morning. I only use it for Criterions and I only watch from my iPhone or iPad when on the road. The most benefit I have found is viewing English spoken documentaries and I've already run through those.

Even though FilmStruck isn't starting until November?

It looks like I'll finally have to get around to watching the 200+ films in my queue before then.

Great thanks, I also have more than 100 on queue (now called watchlist), but there are at least 50 that I have as must watch, so I think there is enough time still.

Watched and now rewatching the A Brighter Summer Day blu this weekend. Such a fun film to explore, there's so much going on in the background, yet if you only followed the main thread you would still walk away satisfied with it.

For those wondering how it compares to Yi Yi, it's similar in many ways and yet quite different in tone. YiYi is a less angry film, which makes sense given the content of ABSD and the period it explores (1960s) as well as Yang being a younger and different man at the time of ABSD. Obviously, ABSD is a more violent film as well.

The documentary extra is a must watch, if only to get a sense for how complex the politics were for those involved in those tumultuous years of New Taiwanese cinema.

Also, "Sly" probably deserves a place in the "Great Criterion Films a$$holes" list that we did here a few months ago.

Right now my internet speed is a blistering 1.1 Mb/s. Plus, I only get 50 Gb/month and it is $15/Gb thereafter.

They are rebuilding my telephone line to my house so I should get around 10Mb/s this summer. It's the only drawback of living in the hills of the Bluegrass.

To be honest I'd be sad if they released anything before The Tenant. I mean, it seems like an obvious release to me (and there was also a rumor about this one based on the 2013 newsletter. Or did it turn out to be something else?)

TCM and The Criterion Collection are my movie life, so I'm very happy with this new announcement.

(I only had Hulu for Criterion, so I don't really care that it's going away as long as we get the same films and more).

I do wonder if it'll be the same amount as what Hulu has. I got the impression that it'll be a more catered and revolving selection of titles. It also sounds like you have to pay extra for Criterion on top of the Filmstrck service, so the difference in price between that and Hulu Plus may be quite big.

One plus is it sounds like the extras will be more extensive than Hulu's offerings, including stuff like commentary tracks now as well.

Dr. Strangelove will be released in a DigiPack case (Amazon UK image for the UK release).

I get that impression, too.

I wonder if this new streaming deal will affect physical release deals. Maybe, for example, it will open up some new doors for future releases.

LOL that's terrible. I'm on basic service in Los Angeles and just clocked mine at 233.45 Mbps.

The article on Criterion.com says the Criterion channel will have over 1100 films. Hulu is only about 900, right?

I took it to mean that's the total amount of Criterion films there are, and you are gaining access to that vast library, but not all at once.

They also specifically say

Quote:
alongside a broad and constantly rotating selection of Criterion films, complete with the commentaries and rich supplemental content that Criterion viewers have come to expect. Carefully curated and always changing, it should be a cinema lover’s dream.
They essentially say the same thing twice by saying the selection will be constantly revolving, and always changing. I'd love for them to offer 1,100+ films, but I'm not sure that will be the case.
