A contact I have has told me there's an Ultimate Collectors Edition planned that will come with "things".

Indeed. This has "Warners tat-filled cash-in with the old disc" written all over it.

I can't comment on that. He only gave a little information

Sounds good if there's a new transfer. Tell us more about this contact you have.

Last night, I spent some time at the Torrance's, courtesy of WB. Jack didn't seem to be himself. Dick Hallorann stopped by, but his visit was cut short...

I hope this is true, a new transfer and digibook release is probably the only way I'll double dip and buy this new "Ultimate Collectors Edition"

Do I still need to buy the US disc to get the long version of the movie? Is the US version region A locked?

Yes, the region A release is, as far as I'm aware, the only version with the longer US theatrical cut. It's region free.

Obviously I have verified this by checking the disc.

Since the word used was "things", I'm betting it will look a lot like the Ultimate Edition of Cuckoo's Nest also starring guess who.

I wish Criterion could get ahold of this film and release remasters and restorations of the short and long cut. I prefer the short cut and own that one on bluray but Id like to have new restorations and transfers of both.

If a special edition is released, I doubt it will have many new features. It most likely wouldn't contain any deleted scenes - Kubrick seemed to be fanatical about making sure stuff like that never saw the light of day. And other than Vivian Kubrick's short documentary (already on the existing disc), I doubt there would be any definitive making-of documentary.

I'd love to see the original ending that played for a weekend before Kubrick exiled it to another universe somewhere. And the original mono audio, too (though the remix is certainly respectable).

Still, what we have is pretty nice. Both the US and UK Blu-rays are region free and relatively inexpensive, and they contain more special features than Kubrick probably would have allowed.

How bizarre that the most recent DVD version doesn't match the blu-ray version. In every other country (to my knowledge), they're in synch.

Thanks for that confirmation.

What was the original ending? I didn't know one existed.

I believe Wendy visits Stuart Ullman, or he visits her and Danny....etc to check on Danny. And he returns the infamous ball to Danny

Supposedly, it's in a hospital, so I would assume he is visiting them. The big thing I remember hearing, they "never found Jack Torrance's body".
