Default A reason I hate Toshiba and HD DVD

First, I would like to say my dad knows nothing about Blu-ray or HD-DVD. My dad owns a TV & appliance store. Among the TV brands he sells is Toshiba. Today my dad asked me if I knew anyone who wanted an HD-DVD player. I told him "no" and not to get any from his dealer, because he would not be able to sell any in our small town. He told me Toshiba has made it manditory for all stores selling Toshiba to carry at least two of the $299 players or else he couldn't sell Toshiba. The worse part is they cost him $319. If he cannot sell them, then he is stuck with them. He will get a $70 rebate if they do sell though.

This leads me to believe that you know nothing about quality work. It's one thing to dislike them because they back HD DVD, but to make belive that do shoddy work...

This is the second topic (other one on a different webstie) that i have seen about Tosh forcing people to sell the player at a loss. The other guy was a bigbox retailer, so its happening to them too. I wasn't sure if i believed it, but now i do. Retailers are gonna love blu now, studios love blu more now, customers love blu now, so tell me why is Toshiba still fighting????

Circuit City stopped carrying Toshiba for a time due to something similar. They recently just started carrying Toshiba again, and I'm guessing it's because Toshiba lifted their requirements for them solely to get them to carry HD DVD. Personally, and this has nothing to do with HD DVD, but if I owned or ran a electronics store, I wouldn't carry Toshiba. I've owned a lot of their DVD players, from cheap DVD/VCR combos, to models from their audio grade line, costing 2000.00. I've never been satisfied with the quality or performance of any of their products, except the XA2. But, already I've had operability and reliability issues with that piece as well. I have very little faith in the long term reliability of their products and in most cases the design quality.

I hate to say never, because I have a habit of giving companies a second chance even when they haven't shown they deserve it, but at this point in time, I wouldn't even consider a Toshiba product as a gift or for myself, even if every other brand cost more and had less bells and whistles. I simply don't trust their designs. I wouldn't even have one of their players for HD DVD if any other manufacturer was supporting the format, assuming anothers unit wasn't a rebadged Toshiba. Of course cheap chinese players are an even poorer alternative.

yuup...the fact that they try to strong-arm, that is enough reason alone to drop them...

I love how MS tries to say that sony is forcing blu-ray on people by putting it in the PS3, but Toshiba is forcing vendors to stock HD DVD if they want to sell other products. I hope BD backers aren't doing this. Sony certainly didn't force me to buy one of their HDTVs w/ the purchase of a PS3, or a PS3 w/ the purchase of anything Sony.

I wonder if this is the situation at the big vendors, like BBuy. Something tells me it could be, since all the BBuys I see have displays for BD but not HD DVD, and the HD DVD players (HD-A2 and HD-A20) are just stacked on top of each other to save shelf space.

Thumbs down

I hate Toshiba too, because I never had a Tosh product that worked correctly. I would "never" buy anything ever again made by Tosh.

According to a distributor I was talking to a few weeks ago LG has also made it mandatory for all stores carrying LG products to also carry and sale the $1200 LG combo player that does not work correctly with HD-DVD discs. According to the distributor I know you can not sale any LG products unless you also sale LG’s $1200 combo player that has serious technical issues.

Retail Stores that do not sale to many LG or Toshiba products and are not interested in carrying HD-DVD or non working combo players can make a business decision and drop the entire LG and Toshiba product line if they want.
It is possible other companies are doing the same thing in this format war. It all depends on the retailer and what market they are trying to reach. Some retailers will not mind being forced to carry players.

Does Toshiba really think they are a Hot Commodity in the TV world where they can shot call like this?

If I were your dad I would tell them to kick rocks and pick up a few other models from the competition.

How dare they...their TV's are "Mediocre-At-Best" and they are pulling this?

And everyone says Sony is the bad guys...

Who knows one day it might be a requirement to carry HD-DVD movies in all retail stores if a retailer wants to be a Microsoft authorized dealer selling Microsoft products. As far as I am aware no requirement like that currently exists but who says something like that could not happen in the future.

I am sure it's nice.
Comparing their products to Sony & Samsung in the TV realm is like comparing a Toyota to a ford in reliability. Most will whole heartedly take Toyota (Sony or Sammy) over Tosh.

But thats not what this threads about...Toshiba pulling this Bully tactic is just hillarious...how desperate they have gotten.

I am glad you like your display. Toshiba has now discontinued all rear projection displays in favor of flat panels.

Haha, I know. I'm going to start typing that. That display was top of the line a year ago. My parents paid 4000$ for it.

I don't want to get into anything with you but when I sold computers, these were the least returned and had the highest satisfaction, even more than Sony. And I used to love the minidisc because they were smaller than cd players but mp3 hadn't come out yet.
