Sounds to me like they are changing carriers. I know that UPS is infamous for charging stupid amounts on any and every package that crosses the border. It was mentioned earlier in this thread as well. Can anyone confirm this? Are they moving to UPS from Canada Post?

From http://www.buyusa.gov/canada/en/50.html

Most products that are sent to a Canadian and worth CDN$20 or less are not subject to duties or taxes. Exceptions to this exemption include: tobacco, books, periodicals, magazines, alcohol, and goods ordered through a Canadian post office box or intermediary. Items valued at more than $20 are subject to GST, HST and PST, as well as duties if the goods are not manufactured in North America.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've asked about that too.

As you may know, orders that are shipped to countries outside the U.S. may be subject to import taxes, customs duties, and fees charged by the destination country.
May --> Definitely will

Just buy 1 blu-ray at a time.. if it's under $20 they are not suppose to charge duty on it. .Anything under $20 is duty free.
Anything under $60 can be sent as a gift duty free also.

I believe books, magazines and videos are duty and tax free under NAFTA.

But, I can confirm that under $20 doesn't have it:

Code:
Items: $9.99
Shipping & Handling: $7.98

Total Before Tax: $17.97
Estimated Tax: $0.00

Order Total: $17.97
But, under $20 including the shipping. Which is pretty much impossible for Blu-ray at this point.

Code:
Items: $15.95
Shipping & Handling: $7.98
Promotion Applied -$0.80

Total Before Tax: $23.13
Estimated Tax: $0.00
Import Fees Deposit $2.43

Order Total: $25.56

Aren't the books and DVD's being shipped out of Ontario to begin with? I'm not paying import fees for something shipping from Scarborough! I guess I'm sticking to Amazon.ca from now on.

How disapointing.

Heres my guess as we all know the usps tracking blows here as there is none, people are claiming non receipt and Amazon is cracking down and going to a trackable method. I guarantee thats why.

Well if this really is their new policy they just lost all my business. I have ordered around 200 Blu-rays from then and I will not order any more if this is the case.

It seems it is based on either weight or value and not just number of boxes. One copy of The Dark Knight has a import fee of $3.64 US. 2 copies of The Dark Knight has an import fee of $6.94 US (so $3.30 US for the 2nd copy). One copy of Firefly on Blu-ray has an import fee of $8.09 US.

That's it - I'm done with Amazon.com. Luckily I still have all of my nice 3 for 2 pre-orders in there for the rest of the year and none of them show this new fee. Of course all were made before Oct. 15

+1

right now i've got 91 blu-rays, all except a couple came from amazon.com.
with the exchange rate and now this import fee it's no longer worth it. all my blu dollars are going to futureshop from now on.

Indeed, with the dollar drop this represents a sudden 30% increase in the landing cost of discs from Amazon.com in a space of about two weeks. It's absolutely insane.

Nah i'am pretty sure that someone complained to the borders. Canada Post offert a Duty service for US CE. They include Taxes and processing fee

theorically on a 30$US x 1.24 (exhange rate at Bank) = 37.20$CAN

You should pay about 7.20CAD (or 5.80US on Amazon) for the taxes. This vary with the exchange rate off course.

They do this (the border in our country) and force us to buy from inside the country. Witch i'am doing since a while now.

Which products does the Import Fees Deposit apply to?

Eligible items sent via Priority International Shipping will have an estimated Import Fees Deposit applied to the order. Orders for some types of products may only be sent via Priority International Shipping and to certain eligible countries. Orders for books, music, videos, or DVDs that are shipped via Standard International or Expedited International Shipping will not include an estimated Import Fees Deposit.
I just added Iron Man BD with standard delivery and it added the deposit. Doesn't it contradict whats above?

I have a few preorders at amazon.com

They were placed a while ago.

I don't see any import duties listed so far.

If they start to add that, then good-bye .com

Shame really.

On a separate note, for a while the "Combine orders" feature at amazon.com was not working. About a week or two ago it started to work again. This feature made it easy to combine orders to minimize shipping charges. I thought amazon.com was going up hill for Canadians. Maybe not now.
