I'm hanging out for the "Abyss and True Lies Planned for 2017?" thread next year more than the actual Bluray release now.

Maybe True Lies and Abyss will actually make it to 4k now when they're released.

I'm not planning to see any of the sequels and also hope it dies after part 2. (I'm prepare for the worst)
Who's Jim?
James?
I will never understand why people want a film to fail. How would you like it if people wished that whatever you do for work was a failure?

Because if James Cameron stop working in these bad movies he could actually make something good instead, it's pretty simple.

Yes, filmmakers really should consult you on what they should and should not make. There are plenty of people who love Avatar. It's also a passion for Cameron. It's much better that he make something he is passionate about than making something to appease some internet fanboys.

For those complaining about the prospect of Avatar 2 - I don't know about you but I've sat through some pretty awful would-be blockbusters within the last year like Terminator Genisys, Warcraft, and Independence Day Resurgence. Avatar 2 sounds like Heaven right about now.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to hope Avatar sequels are not a success if you don't like the franchise and want other stuff from Cameron. Seems logical to me. We all hope for what we want to happen, even if others disagree.

Lol. Comparing any starving artist to the director of the 2 highest grossing films of all time in regards to passion projects and public perception. Yeah, sure.

How do you know whatever else he made would be automatically good? If you don't like this, then there's no guarantee of anything.

Absolutely not let everyone make the choice, the box office sales will decide, that's why I hope it'll be a failure.

He could work on the Blu-ray releases of both True Lies and The Abyss first. Anything would be better than any Avatar related movies if you ask me but you're right there's no guaranty.

Yeah, like terminator 6 or aliens 5. That wouldn't be a waste of time at all.

Ones that deliver a message/commentary without shoving it down our throats. And some characters that are three dimensional (as opposed to just the image) would be nice to.
Everyone expected Titanic to be a piece of garbage and flop horribly and basically bankrupt the studio due to being insanely expensive. I remember preview articles in the likes of Premiere magazine all about how this was super-expensive and Cameron standing around on a huge sinking ship set was a great metaphor for the movie itself, etc. We all saw how that turned out.

Avatar spawned even more vitriol and predictions of failure than Titanic, with everyone (myself included) thinking the trailers looked completely idiotic, tons of people comparing it to "Delgo" and World of Warcraft landscapes, etcetcetc. We all saw how that turned out.

Everyone's predicting these to bomb horribly because "no one still cares about Avatar," myself included. However, past history has shown that the guy is apparently either a wizard or has a deal with Satan. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion AT ALL. The only time (well, post Piranha 2) he made something unsuccessful was The Abyss, and almost all of his movies have been made with the public expectation they'd be terrible and/or box office poison (well, besides maybe T2 and True Lies).

It seems like he's totally committed to multiple movies, no matter how badly the first sequel does. IIRC, they've already filmed large chunks of parts 2 and 3. Thus, I don't think hoping for failure would free him up any faster. Looks like best case scenario, he'll be done with Avatar by 2020. I'd rather hope they were good, so at least we'd have something worth watching out of this sacrifice of The Abyss and True Lies on blu-ray! Then again, parts 4 and 5 are also in the works, so I guess if the first two TOTALLY bomb then maybe he'd be free in 2020 instead of 2023 or later.

I know this isn't related to The Abyss or True Lies, but since this thread is technically about James Cameron, I wanted to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2: Judgment Day for July 3rd.

Still a great sequel and one of James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger's best films. It's surprising how well the visual effects for the liquid metal have held up.

Quite right about Titanic, I can still remember all the bad buzz about it and the mishaps on set like the chowder being spiked with PCP or whatever it was, and then BOOM: biggest movie of all time and a record-equalling Oscars haul. If anything Avadah was the opposite, I don't remember hearing much about it one way or the other in the lead-up to the movie, and then BOOM: biggest movie of all time. Again.

Cameron can't write dialogue for toffee, but he has this God-given knack of being able to craft universal stories that really tap into people's emotions and he's an amazing visual storyteller with few equals: who needs dialogue when he can convey so much through other means? I don't think the sequels will do the same sort of business, but they won't end up short of cash. And if they do end up doing badly then they can always include Abyss and True Lies as 'special features' on the Blu-rays, that'd get a few people to buy them!

Jeez, 25 years already?! Hard to believe. I saw it with a friend of mine when I was 12. First R rated movie I saw in the theater and with no parental supervision, either. It was such a blast!

Arnold had a great post to celebrate T2 recently on facebook with a lot of goofs and behind the scenes from the production. Really hope we will get the needed deluxe treatment soon on disc.

I have a query:

I recently bought a region 1 DVD of True Lies with a copyright date of 1999 from Amazon. I'm a little confused as I've read that it was only available in the U.S. with a non-anamorphic transfer yet my disc is anamorphic.

Can anyone shed any light on this? The disc and packaging look official to me so I don't think it's a bootleg.

Are you sure your BD player isn't just set to stretch/blow up the non-anamorphic picture?

Nope it isn't set to do that and neither is my TV. It said 2012 next to the title on Amazon so it's possible that it might've been silently reissued with an anamorphic transfer.
