BFG is at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Tarzan is bombing at 34%.
To 3D or not to 3D verdict out.

Wow, looks like Cinemablend really enjoyed the 3D in this one. Thanks!

EDIT:

3D Previews:
Moana 3D (Disney Thanksgiving Day release) Medium 3D. Looks good.
Pete's Dragon 3D Trailer 2: Mild to medium 3D.
Monster Trucks: Mild to medium 3D.
Wild Life 3D: Strong 3D and amazing pop outs. (Pop outs on par with Secret Life of Pets' 3D trailer).

The Big Friendly Giant 3D:
3D Layers: 8/10. Mostly medium 3D with some strong 3D layering/volume now and then. Looks very good in 3D.
3D Pop Out Count: Maybe 2 noticeable pop outs throughout.
3D Framing: Some nice 3D set ups here and there.
3D Conversion: Very nice conversion of the 2D elements, blended with the CGI 3D. Didn't see any conversion errors.
3D Total: 8/10. A very good 3D hybrid conversion.

Best way to describe the movie is as a charming tale of a kind Giant trying to live his quiet life as a dream catcher while dealing with the tough giants that only want to cause trouble. Great expression in the BFG's face. He reminds me of the realism of Gollum.

Looks like the BFG is not doing so well in it's opening weekend.

BFG bombed! I didn't make it to see it but I will pick this up day one on Blu. I'm a little surprised that it did so bad with Spielberg attached to it and the positive reviews.

I am skipping both BFG and Tarzan at the box office, but will be going to see Secret Life of Pets. BFG is not playing in IMAX here and I'm not too interested in Tarzan at all. Tarzan isn't even a day one buy for me on Blu unless its 22.99 or less.

The weather was really nice this weekend in many areas, so people are more eager to stay home and enjoy it for the holiday.
So if Disney writes this off as a loss right away, that suggests they believe there's no chance they'll make their money back.

I can see a movie like this being made for $70 million, but I guess inflation and costs have probably doubled in the past 10 years from what used to cost 70.

But yeah, just because critics may like it and it's based on a popular book, doesn't mean it's a guaranteed success. Disney hurt itself by sending it out against Finding Dory, it's own Pixar movie. Whoever does the scheduling...

With Secret Life of Pets opening next weekend, BFG is screwed.

not to be contrary, but I always found it among his best. I liked it better than Charlie and the chocolate factory for example.

Good point. I'm hearing people I know who don't even go to see movies, saying they want to see that one about the dogs.

I was surprised too that this movie didn't do very well. Disney + Spielberg = BOXOFFICE HIT is what I was thinking. It got good reviews from critics but Tarzan got bad critic reviews but came in stronger than what the studio was expecting. Never know

Looks like giants aren't big box office draw. I can't help but see the similarities with Jack the Giant Slayer, that flopped hard too.

Interesting. There are a lot of articles that I never saw before (many dated Sept. 2015) that show Spielberg and Disney were parting ways after BFG. Disney may not really care what this movie does, when it comes down to it.

I know one thing: It won't be in 3D when released on Blu in the States.

Very good point. I agree.
The 3D here is generally better than Jack Giant 3D.

It would have done better, I agree. It's a good family movie.

You're likely correct, knowing Disney's recent 3D track record in the US.

Though it had other studios contribute efforts, Disney was the opening logo.

I saw the movie. It's got beautiful visuals and great use of 3d but is very non eventful. Nothing suspenseful ever happens. The final action scene lasts about two minutes! I'm not exaggerating either. It's mainly the girl and the giant talking to each other. I personally liked it because of the visuals and 3d but it's definitely flopping for a good reason of being frankly boring to watch.

Edit: Jack the Giant Slayer is a way better movie than BFG with good suspense and great action.

Not every movie needs loads of action though. Perhaps this is similar in tone to something like Hugo, that was a wonderful film yet loads of people in this forum were calling it boring and uneventful. Hugo also flopped in the US.
