The curve lends more rigidity to a very thin panel. Consider a piece of paper. If you support it from the bottom while flat, it will flop over, but curve it, and it will completely support itself. So there may be some fragility issues related to the thinness of the panels, and people favor the thin esthetic just as much as the weight can be an issue for thicker panels. But, yeah, a curved screen is also bad for anyone but the single individual who can sit at the center of radius.
With the impending launch of PS Neo, I've been thinking about the upgrade myself. I would keep my VT60 that I watch most of my movies on, but I would replace the 52XBR2 fossil I game on (it's getting a permanent yellow stripe near the right edge, anyway). Stopped gaming on the VT60 due to burn in.
Yeah but does it HAVE to be that thin? Personally I'd rather have a thicker panel that's not curved and I'd be willing to bet most would feel the same way.
