It could have been a truly great film if it wasn't trying to subvert expectations and the director wasn't acting like some film school student trying to show how subversive he could be.

I keep holding out hope we'll find out that "creative differences" have happened and he won't be directing Episode IX...he best not try this shizz with Star Wars. Jurassic World was as good as it was in spite of him, not because of him. Blech.
I think you may be the first person I've ever seen mention "Jurassic World" and "arty" in the same breath.

While I do blame Jurassic World's issues on the director, it's certainly not because he was trying to be subversive (or even creative). It's a by-the-numbers mainstream movie if I ever saw one.

I went into this film looking for good fun, amazingly I wasn't let down.
Dinosaurs attacking people, people attacking dinosaurs, a little humor injected in, great visuals and some much appreciated continuity. No need to overthink the room on this one. Great fun.
Yep, it worked for me! JP5 please!

I didn't care for this much going into it, but it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Certainly the best Jurassic Park sequel.

I also didn't know Vincent D'onofrio was in this so it was really cool to see him. I also marked out for the return of the old music and
[Show spoiler]the DNA cartoon character!

Chris Pratt was Starlordish, but I was okay with that.

My main gripe was the two kids. Unlike the first movie, they were the complete opposite and annoying as fu** (as well as Claire wearing high heels throughout the whole movie). I was hoping the Dragon Rex ate them.

That final fight was amazing though!

Aw, heck. I finally watched this again and I really got into it. The scintillating AV quality of the Blu-ray certainly helps, mind you.

We'll see, we'll see.

So, if you care to elaborate, what made it click with you this time around?

I just kinda 'got it', I guess? The "aren't we clever, poking fun at corporate sponsorship [whilst having everything sponsored by Samsung]" bit still rankles but it's just a few beats, it's not the whole movie or anything. And those dorky control room folks get plenty of other funny moments. As for Bryce, Pratt and the kids I never had much of a problem with them first time around, but surprisingly Vincent D'Onofrio seemed a bit more three dimensional, and I don't just mean his gut. I'm still not quite sure how Irrfan Khan is playing his character though (one minute he seems kind and benevolent, the next he's an arrogant dick, then back again).

I loved the Giacchino score (natch) and the action is terrific, that final fight between the Indominus and the big T is a thing of beauty. I suppose I just turned off the critical part of my brain (well, not all the way, but close enough) and soaked it all in. Maybe I should never comment on movies unless I've seen them at least twice? Not sure if I could tolerate Only God Forgives again though

I find that a lot of modern dumb blockbusters grow on me the more I watch them. I wonder if our previous cinema experiences just send us into the theater with certain expectations that are never met, then later on we take the movies for what they are.

I still wouldn't say I loved Jurassic World, TFA, Robocop Again or whatever else, but they're enjoyable.

I have no desire to watch the Robo reboot again though. Not because it's horribly bad, just horribly redundant because the original film's 30-year-old satire is still sharper than that of the reboot IMO. If I'm in the mood for a Robo movie then that will always be at the bottom of the list, even behind RoboCop 3.

Me softening on certain films not a new phenom though, I remember watching Starship Troopers at the cinema and thinking it was shit, but soon afterwards I realised its genius. Never say never, I guess...

I'm about to bump that thread, just watched it tonight so it was on my mind. It's an extremely serious movie, even the Sam Jackson stuff is more a serious representation of media spin than an obviously satirical comedy piece. That makes me see it more as its own movie, which helps me like it as its own thing.

That's great you enjoyed it much more this time, I was commenting in the movies forum a few weeks ago about how I've really enjoyed it the 3 times I've watched it and couldn't really get why people had such strong views against it.

I admit the story isn't ground breaking or anything, but I think it does what it sets out to do really well and is very entertaining. The sequel will be interesting though, as that kind of has to move in a new direction somewhat.

Awesome soundtrack too, LOVE the new themes Giacchino created to complement the old ones!
