hey,,, i'm new to this forum, my playstations hdmi port broke so now i can only get hd content from my component or s-video connections,, i wanted to know which one is better as far a picture quality,, and is hdmi really give u a better picture?? is it worth waiting a couple of months to go through the long repairing process?? or should i just run optical out to get hd sound,, and component to get hd video??

Well, for one, you're not going to get "hd" sound through optical. Optical will only pass Dolby Digital and DTS standard, not true hd. Picture quality will be better through hdmi as well, due to the fact that there is no longer a need to convert to analog when sending the signal via hdmi vs. Component. If I were you I'd get her fixed if you've got the equipment to take advantage of the sound and better picture.

As for the video part, unfortunately what you said is true in theory but doesn't necessarily apply to all TVs in the real world. Many earlier HDTVs convert HDMI to anolog first so you won't get the "all-digital" benefit from HDMI. You have to be your own judge on that. Note, PS3 will not pass BTB and WTW over component so if you like the wider dynamic range (again, if you have a TV that can take advantage of it), HDMI is the way to go. enjoy gandalf ![]() P.S. Oh, and if you want a component cable I highly recommend the Sony brand cable -- it is cheaper than other cables carried by my local shops and it's also better (less ghosting). ![]() |

When you say component cables, I'm judging you mean analog outputs. With analog outs you can output uncompressed surround sound, whereas optical outs only can output 2 channels of uncompressed audio.

If your HDMI port is broken, get it repaired. Seriously.

My stupid LG TV doesn't process the HDMI signal the same as when I input through Component, so Component actually looks BETTER.
I have huge banding/false contouring issues through HDMI, which I don't have at all through Component. Also, the TV seems to have issues accepting the 1080i signal correctly. It produces some line-jumping effect -- especially on brighter lines of text. The Component connection is a tad softer, and the whites are not quite as bright. I get by, but I'm not happy with LG. Component is fine. Their service has no clue, and has changed the internals. It's a design flaw of some sort. They tried to say it was the PS3's fault. |
