I'm doing a rewatch of the LOTR EEs with the Jackson/Walsh/Boyens commentaries, it's taking some time simply because I keep dozing off (I've seen these movies too many times...) but I am gaining an appreciation for some of the content added to the EE. I still think most of it is extraneous and I don't miss any of it, but FOTR and TT do play better than I remember in the EE, the former with fleshing out the backstory of Middle-Earth (and incidentally tying into The Hobbit) and the latter with fleshing out Faramir, Theoden, and Gollum/Smeagol a bit more. I'm halfway through ROTK and so far I maintain the EE of that movie is a disaster, even the Saruman scene, but on the whole I don't dislike the EEs as much as I used to.
The Hobbit EEs, on the other hand, are essential. |

LOTR's theatrical cuts are too perfectly paced, they have just the right amount of story and character to keep things moving along while getting you to actually care about the characters. They are perfect, and I don't use that word lightly. That's why I'm not too keen on the EEs; some of the stuff is good but most of it just bogs the movies down. The Hobbit TCs feel like an imperfect middle ground between Jackson wanting to adapt the book as it is, and Jackson wanting to use the book as a framework for a larger Middle Earth story by incorporating the Appendices (and some fan fiction ![]() |

I bought this from Walmart recently for store pickup. It did not come with the advertised uv code slip. I complained to them and eventually got a second copy. It also did not have a code slip. Has anyone else had an issue with this? Warner Brothers seems to be unwilling to give out codes, only will put it in your flixster account.

So I just watched an Unexpected Journey extended edition other day having never seen the theatrical cut and have a question. I remember one of the criticisms of the theatrical cut was that Peter Jackson just dumped in portions of Howard Shore's scores for the original LOTR movies and dumped much of Shores original score for an Unexpected Journey. Watching it I didn't notice this. Was the score "fixed" with the extended cut and the wholesale LOTR score recycling dumped?

I honestly never heard that criticism about the AUJ score. There's obviously a lot of music from the LOTR movies, but it all plays into elements in AUJ that call back to specific moments or places from LOTR (Shire, Rivendell, Galadriel, Gollum, etc.).

Yeah I thought it was no different then how themes get reused in the Star Wars films. I just remember people at the time of the first Hobbit film coming out complaining that Jackson had re-edited the score that Shore wrote and just dumped in cues from the LOTR trilogy. Maybe they were wrong, and don't understand what a leitmotif is?

As you say, this cannot be mistaken for entirely appropriate and expected implementation of existing themes from LOTR, which no one of sound mind would have an issue with. Last edited by BarnDoor; 08-06-2018 at 04:09 PM. |

Honestly, when they were coming out, the Hobbit movies got wayyy too much unwarranted hate (and still do, tbh).
Sounds to me like people were nitpicking another thing doe the sake of nitpicking. |
