This was a great film, and I still have yet to see the first one. The scares were surprisingly effective, and it's shot/scored very well. It reminds me a bit of The Babadook with it's gloomy tone, and I liked it's 70s period setting. Vera Farmiga is amazing in everything she does, and I'm always fascinated with anything involved with The Amityville Horror. I almost wish this film explored that more. It never felt bloated though, even with it's long running time. I admire any sequel that's enjoyable without having seen any other film in it's respective franchise.

I have no idea why it was rated R though. It's spooky, but I can't remember any blood, gore, or even any cuss words. It was perfect the way it was, but I think it could've gotten by with PG-13 easily.

Because it's too scary. That's the reason the first was given a R rating.
