Can't wait for the extras to be announced for this, especially since I passed up a second opportunity to talk to Mick Garris about Psycho IV recently. Hopefully he contributes a commentary.

I heard a rumor several years ago (and it's probably not true) that Psycho IV: The Beginning played in a very small/limited number of theaters in 1990. If so, that would explain the 1.78:1 ratio, but I haven't seen any concrete evidence of it playing in theaters and I seriously doubt Showtime aired it with a 1.78:1 ratio, not in 1990. Who knows? At least it will be the uncensored cut that originally aired on Showtime with the blood and the brief topless nudity from Sharen Camille and Olivia Hussey and not the censored/cut version that airs on channels like AMC, TBS, etc.
Psycho IV: The Beginning was originally a 1990 TV movie, with the OAR of 1.33:1, and it was not filmed in widescreen. Any widescreen releases on home video, the aspect ratio have been modified and enhanced.

I guarantee Mick Garris will do a commentary! As for obtaining the rights for the original, who knows. They did a podcast on Killer Pov a few years back and said how controlling Universal is over the Psycho franchise which is why they weren't allowed to make new artwork for Psycho 2 and 3. I'd love if they did though!

Not sure if this applied to Psycho IV, but there was another film made around the same time called "The Grand Tour: Disaster In Time," which premiered in the US on Showtime simply as "Disaster In Time," but was released theatrically in some countries as "Timescape."

Do we know if Psycho IV was filmed specifically for Showtime, or if Showtime just acquired the US rights for it? It's conceivable that it might have been shot to protect for both 4:3 and 1:85 as many TV movies have been over the years.

My guess... shot open matte and framed for 1.85 safety.

I'm sure Mick Garris knows the answer to that.

I remember reading an interview saying widescreen was his preferred version.

The release is six weeks away, I assume they will announce the extras at Comic-Con?

Still no extras announced, the release is only about a month away. I hope that doesn't potentially mean the release may be delayed.

This is about the only Mick Garris film I can sit through, but he usually gives good interviews. I own the Australian box set, but I may pick this up to throw in there with the others.

I've seen damn near every Perkins film, and I have to say the performance of his that's always stuck with me is his role in THE FOOL KILLER. A unique, unfairly overlooked film that any film buff needs to check out.

He's wonderful in Pretty Poison - I'm hoping TT or Kino are able to license it from Fox one of these days.

So is this not a Special Edition so it will not have a slipcover? I would prefer this match nicely with my Psycho II & III w/ slips

The network buried it on July 4th which is almost certainly the least-watched television night of the entire year.
Although Bates Motel '87 is not great it's still part of the Psycho/Norman Bates Legacy, Personally I was hoping to see this type of release:

this is one of those cases where 'lets just be happy this is being released at all on bd' applies.

I'm going with Amazon. I've wanted this title for a long time, but getting it 2 weeks early isn't quite worth the extra $7 I'd have to pay to do it.

Amazon has it for $19.99 (and who knows, it may end up cheaper by release day). It will be shipped free with Prime. Shout wants $20.99 and $5.99 to ship it.

As much as I like and want to support this movie, $6 in shipping isn't worth it to me.
