No. The higher bitrate IS important (it takes headroom to send the information) but it's more than just the bitrate. The lossy codecs are actually missing information vs. the lossless. Lossless (PCM, TrueHD, DTS-HD) basically gives you everything the source has. Lossy (DD and DTS) is missing some information- explosions don't have as much depth, some surround sounds may be dropped... basically things that you may not miss on a casual listen.

*edit* Really need someone with more knowledge on it than I have. I know there is more to it than what I've explained.
