Watching Oblivion UHD. Great looking in 4K. Zero complaints. IMO one of the best UHD blu-rays out to date!
Some are saying the 1080p blu-ray is looking better. Never once did I think that. This will be my current 4k reference disk. |

I A-B'd the first 15-20 minutes last night with the Blu-ray and UHD. The colors on the UHD blow away its Blu-ray counterpart. The HDR on this is very rich. I do think the UHD seemed a little dark at times even with the Samsung K8500 picture settings on Dynamic. But it's still a noticeable improvement. No Lionsgate situation where the Blu-ray is actually preferable.
BTW, I hate the slipcover. This and Lone Survivor had some glaring scratches and scrapes on the front. |

Watch Oblivion before Lucy. I made the mistake of watching Lucy first. Lucy is sharp and detailed while Oblivion is softer. So after watching Lucy first Oblivion was more of a letdown because of the softness. Yet if I had watched Oblivion first I would have been more impressed.

I remember being very impressed with the BD. And I was expecting to be wowed by the UHD BD. But after seeing all the detail from the Lucy UHD BD. Oblivion just didn't wow me like the BD did. Of course HDR made Oblivion look great. It just didn't show detail like I expected after watching Lucy. I would easily place Lucy at the top of those two titles visually.

Watched Oblivion last night. I'm siding with the folks saying it looks a little filtered. I've used the Blu for demos constantly and am very familiar with the way it looks. I immediately noticed the UHD disc looked slightly filtered and soft in comparison. The new color looks great, and the film still looks very good, but it does look a bit softer than the Blu.
Lucy looked fine from the little bit I looked at, but I only got to look at a few scenes. |

I Picked up Oblivion, Lucy and Lone S' and so far, since I use a different setting for BD over 4K HDR, I have to say the BD had more fine detail than the 4K release which is considerably softer. Colors are more pumped up but so far, I'm not too impressed with Universal's 4K release of Oblivion. Kinda bummed. Out of 23 4K HDR discs, my reference disc is Sicario.

Lucy gets better as the movie goes, its great. But what's going on with these upscales movies being softer? I've noticed it on quite a few 4k movies that some of the upscales come out softer. I popped in my oblivion blu ray last night and the picture is so sharp and 3d looking. Both of those are a little lost on the UHD. Mad Max suffers from extreme softness and loss of texture too. I posted pictures way back in April about it. |

The sooner we get more titles with true 4k digital (not upscale) and 4k scanned original film elements, the better. |

I did a google search just now and the only thing that comes up for a review is this one http://whysoblu.com/oblivion-4k-uhd-blu-ray-review/
At least the reviewer confirms my suspicions over the low audio volume I experienced. I kind of agree too as the image was not as "sharp" as I was hoping for with this being on UHD. However, my limited knowledge does understand too that this is an upscale form a 2K transfer. With all that being said, I CANNOT wait to watch Lucy in 4K this week!!! |

1st review is out.
I skimmed through the review searching for a mention of the softness, and indeed it's almost the 1st thing mentioned. http://whysoblu.com/oblivion-4k-uhd-blu-ray-review/ |

This is just another example of why I was pushing for native resolution releases for UHD Blu as opposed to always scaling to 4K. I would have been happy with a true 2K master with all the other benefits (higher bit depth, wider gamut, HDR) and not have to worry about how good a studio can upscale a movie. Of course the pundits said they have better tools than we do for upscaling so it should be fine, and here we are.

Age of Ultron was horrible for the surround sound, flat and dull. Thought something was wrong with my disc. Lucy and Lone Survivor I'll be getting this week!! |
