Well you found 1 scene that looks better. But I bet those are few and far between over the entire movie from what I and others have seen (besides colors)

Yeah... You said about Deadpool UHD 4K some have few soft pictures.
I said 75% sharper pics..25% soft pics

UHD is a great higher bitrates than Blu-ray's bitrates. I knew it.

Yes, the deadpool green screen shots were pretty soft looking.

A lot more facial detail in the UHD pic there.

Well this is odd....

".Speaking of Universal, a number of you have asked when we’ll be reviewing the studio’s new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog product. The answer is: I don’t know. For some reason, the studio has decided not to make it available to reviewers. Seems to me that it’s pretty tough to promote a brand new format when you don’t actually make an effort to promote your brand new format, but go figure."

that screenshot looks pretty good to me, it doesn't have a blue tint like the BD does in those screenshots

Just read this over there myself. I haven't seen the oblivion disc myself, but Lucy looks incredible. Wonder if this may be an acknowledgment of quality issues or merely they haven't sent out their copies yet?

I'm sure Universal isn't hiding anything. Lone Survivor and Lucy look excellent. Oblivion is only lacking by comparison to what was done with Lone Survivor. It still looks better than the BD.

I can save everyone the trouble:

(Predicts future)

4K video scores:

Lucy: 4.5/5
Lone Survivor: 3.5/5
Oblivion: 3/5

So be like the rest of us and buy the goddamn disc yourself and review it ...? ...or are there embargoed reviews / guidelines that reviewers have to bide by?

I don't know why people complain about Oblivion. Sure the 4K direct source would have been great, but outside of few scenes with soft look the UHD looks perfect from the perspective of HDR and sounds great with ATMOS. HDR alone makes this a double dip for me. Few scenes are softer with few close ups sharper which is weird but definitely better than Blu-ray.

heres a picture comparison posted over at AVforums.com, these are NOT my pictures.

people need to get past the HDR and look deeper. yes, the clouds and sunsets and colors all look great. but textures are missing and sharpness is much softer. id say 75% of the movie is noticeably softer. a 4k movie should never be softer than a 1080P counterpart.

pay attention to:

overall sharpness of the girl
texture/depth of the wrinkles on her dress near the hip area
texture/sharpness of the wall behind the girl
the chair itself
the back wall has a "muddied" look to it, its not clean.

Based off those screen shots I wouldn't say it's less sharp. Your complaints seem to stem from the HDR changing the overall look of the film. At least based on that screenshot comparison. I haven't seen either disk set. But those caps aren't really proving your point.

Based off those screenshots, its noticeably softer. That's quite disappointing. How can it not be at least equal to the BD at all times?

I will never understand why studios are killing this format by forcing upscales and HDR re-grading on us when not needed...

Just give us the original DI/DCP as it was!

If you're already torn based on what you've read in this thread, good bet that going 4k on this one would only result in your own case of maddeningly mixed feelings.

Sticking with the blu seems like a no-brainer: Few would suggest it's significantly worse than the UHD, while many claim it is superior.

If you had a clear preference for HDR support over detail/resolution considerations, it might be another story...

As for me: Never owned the blu, but it's an irony of the Oblivion 4K discussion in this forum that finally drove me to pony up and order the modestly priced blu-ray for 8 bucks yesterday.

I took delivery of the Oblivion HD Blu-ray just today but this is also due to the lottery of SDR conversion re: re-graded HDR movies on my set-up, I'm fed up with all the chopping and changing of settings whereas new HDR movies are much more consistent. (I also rebought the 1080p Blu of Lucy a few weeks ago for the same reason)

What of the notion that it's a little early to be "too" harshly criticizing the PQ of a title when--on the pro side--I think studios and mastering houses might still be sussing out how different elements respond to an HDR grade and--on the consumer side--calibration standards specifically contemplating HDR have yet to be set (right?)?

It's a combo pack. Don't like the UHD? You can spin the 1080 BD instead.

Delivering the original DI/DCP at home wouldn't give better quality. Keep in mind that the T.V. sets we have at home are fixed-pixels display based so if a non-standard video signal is fed it has to be scaled (either up or down) to the panel's native resolution. If done well, a professional upscale should look better than the upscale rendered by the inexpensive built in scaler of a T.V. set or a Blu ray Disc player.
