Sony Pictures Body Double (1984) (Choice Collection)

Body Double (1984) coming from Sony

Quote:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPHE LAUNCHES NEW BLU-RAY™

MANUFACTURE-ON-DEMAND PROGRAM

Blu-ray “Choice Collection” Kicks off with Long-Awaited Debuts

of The Karate Kid Part III (1989) & The Next Karate Kid (1994)

on September 6

CULVER CITY, Calif. (August 19, 2016) – On September 6, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) launches the Blu-ray™ “Choice Collection,” the newest format offering from SPHE’s successful Manufacture-on-Demand (MOD) program. The “Choice Collection” offers a diverse slate of titles, encompassing something for every taste, with a curated flow continuing throughout this year and into next.

The collection kicks off with the long awaited Blu-ray debuts of fan favorites The Karate Kid Part III (1989) and The Next Karate Kid (1994). In October, the slate includes Brian De Palma’s edge-of-your-seat thriller Body Double (1984), Marie Antoinette (2006), which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary, and the acclaimed music documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005). All features are presented in full high definition with lossless audio.

Blu-ray MOD is an exciting expansion of the existing DVD MOD program, which has seen a variety of the studio’s fan favorites, cult classics and hidden gems come to market with a seamless consumer experience, via retailers such as Amazon.

I wonder if it will have the existing DVD featurettes. I missed out on the Twilight Time release, so I'll pick this up if the price is under $20.

So...BD-R? Guess I'm glad I paid the TT premium (even though there's a cheap foreign one too!).

If it's BD-R they can keep them.

Seconding. I'm hoping these are pressed discs similar to WAC.

Body Double is also available as a Sony 4k download for $25. It has been for a few years now (as well as several other Sony titles released by Twilight Time).

i like that sony is doing this. now, we have a new way to disrespect art by taking acclaimed films from respected directors and not even given them a pressed blu ray.

its also hilarious that depalma documentary will get a pressed bd and this might get a bd-r.

I've already got the Twilight Time release, so I'm good on that front. I'd be interested in getting The Devil And Daniel Johnston, although I'd rather it NOT be BD-R (not that I don't have one already, I'd just prefer a pressed disc).

Want this movie but if it's a BD-R I would rather import instead. Hopefully these are pressed like Warner Archive.

The Amazon page for Karate Kid III basically confirms that these are BD-Rs. Straight from Amazon:

It very well could be an "assumption" on Amazon's part that the "SPE" Blu-ray, like the DVDs from Sony, are burned rather than pressed. This and the Karate Kid movies are popular enough to warrant a pressing so I'd say the odds are good that the info is just wrong.

Why would they assume anything? Don't you think that info came straight from Sony?

And if they're BD-R's, Amazon would be the one burning the discs for the Amazon orders.

Well looking at the case it does say "Blu-ray disc" instead of the Blu-ray logo, so it very likely is a BD-r. If so, it doesn't bother me as much as most others here. If a movie I want on disc is available then I'm gonna buy it. DVD-r has made possible so many releases and it's inevitable that Blu-ray follows the same path as sales decline and unreleased catalog movie selection dwindles. It's something that people will just have to get used to, just as movie fans got used to WAC DVD-r releases. Certainly better than nothing at all or buying a streaming version. Personally I make backup copies of anything I fear could be lost or rare titles.

Pressed discs should be a better quality than burned discs. There's doubts about their shelf life, rate of failure and on occasion you get write errors (the burnt DVDs were plagued with scratches for some customers). It's a far cheaper process as your burn on a need-by-need basis instead of runs of thousands.

They're basically no different than something you'd do at home with a BD burner with a professional label on top. There won't be any difference with the quality of the contents.

Considering they often get aspect ratios wrong, among other specs, Amazon "facts" are to be taken rather loosely. If they got their info straight from the companies, why would they get technical specs wrong?
