Most people don't have their TVs calibrated at all, and some sharpening features can make the grain look really bad.

I think it comes down to TV size, TV calibration and your own eyesight. These 4k remasters tend to make my jaw drop more often than not.
Actually, your Blu-ray player has something to do with it also. I have a Sony 3D player with that Triluminous technology, and it really tends to make the video look a lot better. It also corrects some problems with the video. For example, it corrected the black crush on season 8 of the X-Files. I sometimes compare the difference between my Sony player, and this Panasonic one that I gave my parents, and my Sony blows it away every time. So that is probably another reason why Carrie looked so good for me.

It's not an issue of setting your levels differently for each blu-ray, but just having a correct baseline setting for all of them. Trust me, I've complained in several different threads about the picture quality of various blu-rays (usually that they were too grainy), only to find that they all looked great after calibrating my set (and that's just a personal calibration off a disc, not a professional calibration). I used to keep a table of various TV settings for all my blu-rays, which is exactly what you're talking about, but after the calibration, that list has dwindled to almost nothing.

Currently out of stock online and they don't seem to be taking new orders now but you can check local store stock.

They make them hard to find... usually have to check all formats under the old DVD edition.

Folks, Diabolikdvd has CARRIE in stock for $25. 12 copies left as of right now. Get it while it's hot - it's a little pricier than normal but at least it's not $35. It's a fantastic upgrade.

Yes, ordered a copy of Carrie last night I got sick of waiting. Diabolik is usually my go to for horror titles anyhow esp for Arrow.

I ended up just doing an order for Carrie, Waxworks, and Child's Play I figure I can wait longer makes the shipping worth while.

I viewed the disc this morning.

It is a fantastic presentation from Shout Factory. It may well be their best work this year. People need to support Shout's efforts here and give them all the credit they deserve for this release

Pro-B

I have no idea why The Thing remaster is getting all the love and this is getting a mixed reception when it's clearly the superior of the two being a 4K scan from the negative with no digital tampering. Can only assume people like the more "clean" digital look of The Thing.

I just watched mine and agree with Pro-B. The upgrade is evident right after the opening credits during the shower scene: Spececk's skin texture, with minuscule freckles, wasn't nearly as well rendered in the previous blu. Likewise, small rinckles are now revealed on Piper Laurie's face, adding subtly to her facial expressions during closeup shots. But finer detail shows up everywhere: wallpaper in the background, clothes, etc. I'm so happy with this one.

Well if it's any consolation to you, I sold my MGM blu of Carrie recently to upgrade to the new Shout version - but I'll keep watching my HD-DVD of The Thing, at least this year or until I find a super price on the new one.

I have to agree with Mr. Carpenter

The Carrie release is vastly superior. Very beautiful and superb organic presentation. Five-star material for sure!

Both are at good prices on Deep Discount but they're OOS as of now.

Shot in the dark but does anyone know how soon they might re-stock?

+ Just look up the TV set in that part of bluray.com forum and there will be the specs from other people who have had the same TV already professionally calibrated.

It's super simple and will make watching everything so much better.

It doesn't work like that, every TV even of the same model varies and you will get a different result with the settings. Each TV must be individually calibrated with a colorimeter.

They both look amazing, Thing doesn't look digital at all to my eyes.

Even without that though you can do the basics. Warm color temp, no sharpening, calibrate your brightness and contrast with color bars, etc. Most people don't even do that, and many people on here who complain about these new masters can be found in other forum sections saying they use cool color temp and whatnot. The first step to seeing the image you're supposed to be seeing is those very simple amateur calibrations.

Warm colour temp isn't accurate though, on every TV I've tested it's too cool and you need to adjust the engineer settings to bring it into line. If I were unable to do that I'd much rather a slightly too warm image in the Natural colour temp setting than a slightly too cool image in the Warm setting.

I just use the THX mode on my Panasonic V10 plasma. Apparently very close to an out of the box calibration.
