Getting harder and harder to pick 5.

The upscaling is getting better with 2k movies.

The hdr grading also seems to be improving.

Thank you. Even just directing all pq related questions and comments to this thread seems like would be helpful for all.

I just watched X men first class last night. I've never seen the blu so I can't compare but nothing about the uhd blew me away. There were moments where I noticed 4k like details but overall, seemed like a normal blu to me. If you already own the blu, I dont think it's worth the upgrade. Its also a 2k Upconvert if I am not mistaken.

I'll update op tonight with some of the features.

Honestly, I loved the Mad Max 4K disc. HDR demo disc for sure.

It's a constant state of flux for me, I got The Martian and X-Men Apocalypse earlier this week for my birthday and need to watch them when I get a moment (tending to an 8 month old with a laundry list of medical problems severely limits movie watching). What really strikes me about this format is just how good the releases look out the gate; we're only 6 months in to the format and there's already a wealth of strong looking titles and I get the feeling we're only beginning to scratch the surface of the picture capabilities here. Blu-ray came a long way from the early days of releases until now where every major release is pretty uniform in good to great looking transfers but I think we've peaked in regards to picture quality after a decade.

See pretty much every review I've read on it recommended I skip it and keep the blu but I've had two people here now recommend it. I might have to get it and see for myself. I loved the movie.

I watched a very early release blu recently and I was amazed at how far blus have come. Hopefully it'll be the same for 4k. I can only imagine how amazing the pq will be for uhds 10 years down the line.

UPDATE! Watched The Shallows last night. It was a decent flick but the PQ was great. Also watched Ghostbusters '16 this weekend. It looked good but the color looked off in HDR, skin tones were orangish and the colors were overall too warm. I switched the color gamut to normal and it looked more lifelike and as I remember it in the theater.

1. The Revenant
2. Batman v. Superman
3. The Shallows
4. Sicario
5. The Legend of Tarzan
6. Ghostbusters '16
7. Ender's Game
8. The Last Witch Hunter
9. Watchmen

So I watched the original Independence Day last night. It's the first "old" movie I've watched in the format (geez, 1996 is old now? )

I thought it looked absolutely phenomenal, and better than I could've imagined a movie from the '90s could look.

My new top 5:

1. The Revenant
2. Batman v. Superman
3. The Shallows
4. Independence Day
5. Sicario

No specific order.

Sicario
Revenant
X-Men Apocalypse
The Shallows
Lucy

Unfortunately, half of those are forgettable movies.

---edit---
I haven't seen Pacific Rim or TMNT2 in UHD yet. Those are the next two films on my to-see list. I've watched them both already, and while they are both 'fun' they are deeply flawed movies. Time to break out the Pabst and notepad.

I just saw Sicario tonight and I was blown away by the PQ! Haven't read any reviews on its pq before. Right from the opening scene, I was very impressed.

Added your list to the OP too. Thanks for the input!

Sicario is great, Deakins has one of the best eyes in recent cinema.

So I know we've pretty much all agreed that mad max and pacific rim are worth the double dip/upgrade even though they are 2k masters. Any other ones you guys would recommend?

I disagree on Mad Max: Fury Road.

The difference of perceived-resolution and 'mediocre' HDR aren't worth the upgrade. I'm not a fan of 3D, but this movie is a lot of fun watching it in that format. Also, I am HIGHLY interested in the 'Black and Chrome' version that has been teased for a year now. If you think that just adjusting the color to zero is the same thing, you have no idea what you are missing. I saw a special B&W event of 'The Mist' and was shocked they didn't have that version on a multi disc set, it was easily the best that movie ever looked.

On the other hand, I don't think a 'silent' version of MM:FR would work, even though I would give it a view.

---edit---

To answer your original question: The recent Star Trek movies, Ghostbusters (2016), Life of Pi, and X-Men: DoFP are great 2K upscaled movies. Obviously, I didn't mention all of the animated ones, they get a free pass as CG movies scale up awesomely. Again, I haven't seen TMNT:OftS and Pacific Rim in UHD yet, but I have heard great things.

This, Deakins is one of the main reasons I'm actually kind of excited for the Blade Runner sequel.

Also, I have The Mist on blu and it came with a black and white version. It really changes the tone of the whole film but looks great. I'm sitting on the fence on weather to pick up the black and chrome version of Fury Road, I still haven't even upgraded my version to UHD at this point.

I'd also recommend The Martian as a pretty great looking 2K upscale. My girlfriend even pointed out how great it looked and she doesn't usually notice that when watching something.

I may have to rewatch Sicario. It was one of the first UHDs I watched before my display was properly calibrated.

I've been itching to get it, but I'm hoping that they release the Black and Chrome version on 4k. Then again if there's a great deal on Black Friday I might just do it.
