As for Lucy. I saw that last night and I was so impressed. Def reference material. I posted on my uhd pq thread about how I was able to see every little pore on Scarlets face in the scene of her waking up on the bed like I was laying next to her.
Feeling like your waking up next to Scarlet Johansson is always a good thing.

HD, would it be possible for you to put a marker against the true 4K releases. Something like an Asterisk just after the film?

It says right in the first post that it will be noted if a film was shot on less than 4K but still finished in 4K. So when Skyfall appears on UHD Blu-ray, I'm sure it will have the appropriate amendment in this thread.

[edit] That said, there should really be something next to the Mockingjays as they were shot anamorphic on 2.8K Alexa for a 4K finish. Goofy, it's over to you

I'm starting to think it matters little to be honest.

TMNT 2 "looks" better overall than Xmen Apocalypse IMO.

Today I came to the realization that movies filmed with the Arri Alexa XT look better than movies that used the Red Epic as the main camera. The more controversial movie will be Pacific Rim. While it has great hdr and colors, im not a huge fan of how the upscale looks. I think the Arri upscales have a sharper picture with better texture refinement. Don't get me wrong Pacific Rim looks great because of the hdr/wcg, but Arri movies have better looking resolution imo. We're on the same page with Xmen, I was expecting more resolution wise.

A couple examples:

Arri Alexa:

Lucy
Revenant
Sicario
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Kingsman
Ghostbusters 2016
Deadpool
The Shallows
Huntsman Winter's War

Red Epic dragon:

Xmen Apocalypse
Pacific Rim
Tarzan
The Martian
Exodus
Gods of Egypt

I've always preferred the look of Alexa to RED even before this UHD upscale malarkey started up. RED really does have a superficially sharper look but it's slightly harsher with it, whereas Alexa is smoother and more 'filmic', for want of a better word. RED finished in true 4K is a different story though, as Chappie looks lush and as botched as Expendables 3 is in UHD the level of detail is incredible.

I also think the source being shot anamorphic also helps with the upscale as it uses more of the Alexa's sensor area, e.g. Warners' upscale of San Andreas looks much better than Fury Road in terms of detail. Kingsman is another anamorphic Alexa production and that upscales incredibly well IMO, compared to DOFP which was shot flat on Alexa and hardly resolves any more detail than the BD (though the WCG and HDR still provide benefits).

All good stuff. Those two lists kinda confirm the same thinking for me. I have seen many of those films and I would def lean to the Alexa.

The one place Xmen really failed was the cgi on destruction scenes. I mean the container vessels and container cranes looked like something from a cartoon.

i agree with expendables 3, it was nice and sharp for the UHD. But now that i know all this, ill be looking to see which movies are filmed with the ARRI and which are RED, just so I know what to expect.

It's unbelievable we have come to a point where you have to check the CAMERA the movie was shot with to decide whether the upgrade is worth it or not....
Don't get me wrong, it's extremely fascinating but it also explains why UHD and UHD BD follow the law of diminishing returns

Nothing personal against your movie suggestions but I'd want bright color centric catalog titles - darkly lit movies and specifically Aliens is grain heavy even in 35mm

Well, if everything was mastered using the original source material for UHD then it'd be less of an issue, but with upscales being so prevalent it helps if the source is using as much sensor area as possible, which is where anamorphic comes in.

Default Best 4K Movies to get

For Christmas I'm going to get and treat myself a 4K OLED TV and for Christmas gifts I'm going to ask for 4K movies. What I want to know and ask you all is, what movies should I put on my Christmas list?

I want to get the best PQ movies. One movie that I'm def want to put on the list is Batman Vs Superman: DOJ.
