Except it's not a "restoration". It's just a 4K transfer cleaned up.

Please tell me what's the difference?

To me, a 4K scan, cleaned up and color corrected is a restoration.

Wait, so Twilight Time's release was a 4K scan as well?

Here's one source saying it's from a 4K scan. Robert Harris, in a review over at Home Theater Forum...

Quote:
If I had a rating system in stars, or dots, codfish, or whatever, the image quality of this disc would have a images filled. As a Blu-ray image, probably because it's based upon a new 4k image harvest from a perfect IP, it's perfect, and by that I mean 100%.

Yes, these are all sourced from the same Sony 4k remaster. There might be slight differences (the second Twilight release is brighter for example) but it's the same root master. The reason to get this UK release if you own the TT would be perhaps better encoding, new exclusive features and a new booklet.

I think the term "restoration" is usually reserved for films where the physical elements have deteriorated to the point that a good quality scan can't be accomplished without significant work. Think: The Godfather or Lawrence of Arabia.

There's nothing wrong with the elements for Fright Night, so they just performed a typical "image harvest" aka 4K scan with the typical requisite color timing.

Had you replaced "restoration" with "transfer" or "scan" in your post, Peter would have had nothing to pedantically correct.

Yeah, it is often used interchangeably with transfer or remaster when dealing with older films. Eureka have also labeled it as restoration.

That would make nearly *every* home video master a "restoration" (they do the same with 2K transfers too).

I understand that but when for the 30th Anniversary of a film you do a 4K scan then color correct it and then clean it, I think it's fair to call it a restoration.

When it's SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) it's not fair to the restoration teams who have to repair damaged and faded films like Sony did for Lawrence of Arabia and 1776, searching the world for good elements to use, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of man-hours going frame by frame with digital tools.

It's like saying you "restored your house" when all you did was clean it. Marketing has gone out of hand, desperate for sales because they know the word "restored" will generate sales. It insults people like Robert Harris and Grover Crisp who spend their time and effort on something special.

Agree 100%.

There is big difference between an actual "restoration" and just something that has been scanned "quick and dirty". Just running some digital clean up tools is not a "restoration". Of course, if it actually is a brand new 4K scan it is usually at least a somewhat notable effort (compared to so many blu-rays that didnt' even bother with a new master). So they can call these "remastered" or whatever else they want, and that is fine in my book. They absolutely need to market 4K remasters, and the market should reward studios for legitimate 4K remasters.

But RESTORATION implies an entirely different level of work in terms of cleaning up and repairing damage. Basically it needs to go a step beyond just "scanning" and doing basic clean up. It needs to be frame-by-frame work.

Can't wait! I ordered mine months ago. I also pre-ordered the companion book. I missed out on the American Werewolf book though.

Not sure what o make of this. Based on the conversation earlier in the thread, no "restoration" was needed and the current scan is a 4k scan... so is this just a bunch of hype for a new disc?
