Default IMDB: Most Overrated, Most Underrated

Going by IMDB's ratings, what films do you consider to be the most overrated and the most underrated?

I like Shawshank Redemption and even own it, but the fact it's been the highest rated movie on IMDB for years baffles me.

I suspect some one or more rabid fans of SHAWSHANK figured out long ago how to vote multiple times for that movie. Other than that theory, it baffles me too, but I stopped caring about the rankings at IMDb a long time ago -- like last century.

Interstellar is rated higher than Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Psycho, City Lights, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Green Mile, Modern Times, Rear Window, Terminator 2, Back to the Future, Apocalypse Now, The Lion King, Alien, Doctor Strangelove, The Great Dictator, The Shining, North By Northwest, Vertigo, Braveheart, Resevoir Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Lawrence of Arabia, To Kill a Mockingbird, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Amadeus, Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Oddysey, Toy Story, Singin' in the Rain, The Kid, Scarface, Metropolis, Good Will Hunting, Die Hard, Raging Bull, Blade Runner and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. There's more but I thought I would end it there. Interstellar's not a bad movie, in fact it's a pretty good one. But there's no way it's better than any of those.

Godfather 1 and 2 are overrated. They don't deserve the #2 and #3 spots.

Quite clearly The Dark Knight. I can understand why it's been so popular (I think for many it basically validate the superhero genre and made it seem "serious"), but it's mad it's survived past that frenzied summer of 2008 so high on the top 250 - or on the list at all, tbh. But then again, IMDb is obviously a very adolescent userbase so it's not surprising.

I can understand how that's still there, but Rises still being in the top #100 is ridiculous.

Most overrated is definitely Shawshank. It's the definition of overrated. A good movie, yes. The highest rated of all time? Shouldn't even be in the top 250.

Merits of Dark Knight aside, this idea that only young and naive idiots could like it that much is super condescending bro.

To be fair, most of the Top 250 is made up of extremely overrated modern blockbusters.

And while I'm unsure that Shawshank deserves to be at the top, I'm certain there would be outcry regardless of what movie was #1. At least Shawshank is a more universally praised movie as opposed to some of the other movies on that list. It's a safe #1 movie.

Have you looked through it lately? I don't think this is really true at all. Tons of older movies in there.
