I want to sign up with the $100/year subscription, but there's no reason to start trial that I can't watch on my TV (unless I do mirroring on my Chromecast, which would be lame).
Then wait for them to release the apps and then do the 14 day trial ;p

Bring on movie watching season! ...and woo-hoo! Cubbies!!
I also am severely behind on my movie viewing thanks to the Cubs. I've got a good line of Criterions in the queue and am looking forward to some mental rest and relaxation.

Does anyone know if there are any Criterion titles that appear on Hulu but not FilmStruck?

So, is Come and See truly on Filmstruck (couldn't find it on the list above)? If so, how's the quality? Right now I'm too busy to really benefit of the Filmstruck trial period, so I have to wait few weeks...

I don't remember there being any horror elements, the only thing near that is
[Show spoiler]the son being locked in the dungeon for being naughty
.

I also don't recall it being bleak at all... Actually I don't remember the ending but the tone of the whole piece I'd put as joyous. So... "Into"

I can confirm that it's on there. Not sure about the quality but I plan to watch it in the next week or so.

Mulholland Drive is a FANTASTIC movie.

A truly original work of art.

But I've never viewed it as a horror film, even though it does have some disturbing elements to it.

Personally I think of it as a very strange drama/art film/psychological thriller.

...but it's a difficult picture to categorize.

What are everyone's thoughts on Cat People (1942)? I just got done watching it and am completely baffled as to why this is considered a classic? Aside from a couple very well done scenes (you know the ones) I really didn't get anything else out of it. Help me out here.

I also thought it was alright, but not particularly great,
[Show spoiler]the ending was a bit dull and poorly executed in my opinion
.

But we are probably on the same page as the scenes you mean, those were good, but I don't think everything else is in the same level.

I'm with you 100%. Watched it on TCM on Halloween and just kind of shrugged when it ended. Very glad that I didn't blind-buy the Criterion like I was originally planning to.

Yeah -- I just watched it a couple days ago. I concur with your assessment. Its horror(ish) elements are about as far as I like to go in that direction.

So, less cutesy, I was wondering if the creepy stuff in Fanny and Alexander was milder or worse that MD level. I assume pretty much everyone has seen it [Mulholland].

So I finished A Touch of Zen. Great film but
[Show spoiler]can someone tell me if I over looked the spiritual aspect in the film because that ending came out of nowhere for me. When did Buddha become such an important part of the story that we ended with his image after the monk bleeds gold?

Personally I'm not a fan of Fanny and Alexander.

I've only seen it once and hated it.

But that means nothing, as many people here love it.

I would say it has less of a horror feel to it than Mulholland Drive.

Fanny and Alexander is not "horror" at all, although there are a few moments late in the film that can be unsettling. There's one "WTF?" getaway scene that leaves most viewers scratching their heads, but it's all in the fun. (You'll know the scene that I'm talking about when you see it.)

It's a terrific movie to see around Christmas, because it has one of the coolest screen depictions of the holiday.

Cat People was an early example of the entwining of sex and horror. In fact, I'd be curious as to whether or not David Cronenberg's career would have turned out the same way had Cat People never existed.

Cat People is just as much of proto-noir film than it is a horror film, though, due to its sneaky (catlike?) way of sneaking controversial material past the Production Code. There's an interesting scene where Irena is approached by a mysterious woman when she and Oliver are in a restaurant with friends. It may or may not be a covert hint at past lesbian relationships.

I've always thought of it as a tremendously great film, and in any other year, it would be my favorite Criterion of the year. This time, however, it merely appears in my top five, behind In a Lonely Place, Gilda, and The Asphalt Jungle.

I'm the opposite. Fanny and Alexander is fantastic whereas I watched Mullholland Drive once and I would rather put a shotgun in my mouth than watch that nonsense again.
