So are ALL previous extras accounted for? Anything missing?

It's all there. The stuff from the 2-disc production diaries, the 2-disc special edition, and the 3-disc extended edition.

Whenever the studios do something like that, I assume that there is some financial reason for them to be motivated to burn off excess inventory.

I don't mean to be overly snarky, but why is this terribly surprising? 4K hasn't exactly proven itself as a format just yet. Hell, regular Blu-ray still has rather healthy competition with standard old DVD, and I couldn't tell you how many people I know that can't tell the difference between the two, or care for that matter. Also, let's not forget that this is Universal -- given their catalogue tendencies I'm sure they aren't too keen on having to create a new master for an unproven format. It also shouldn't come as a surprise if the included movie disc is exactly the same as the one currently on the market, with the "new" disc just being created for the special features. And none of this even takes into account the shift to digital.

It may not seem like it around here, but I'd wager that most people are still fine with a single DVD copy these days of a given film. Ten years into the lifespan of DVD it had pretty much completely supplanted VHS; that doesn't look to be happening any time soon with Blu-ray (just look at this combo pack as an example). Personally, I'm a tad bewildered that a new format was even launched when it's predecessor has yet to replace the thing that came before IT.

But that's just me. Other perspectives will likely differ.

Sounds like a great set for those who haven't jumped on the bd version yet or haven't bought the movie at all. I'll pass on this version but still am hopeful for an eventual 4k uhd release. Looks to me they have a glutton of old discs they want moved before a 4k set is even remotely going to be considered.

If you want to be really pedantic, there are two easter eggs which are not officially accounted for, but they are both production diaries not included in their respective packages and thus could be lumped in in the description. Presumably they will be included, as long as somebody involved in the production remembers that they exist.

There is also a production diary which was deliberately unreleased because it was about Howard Shore, who was subsequently fired from the project. It seems like, out of respect for their previous relationship, Jackson didn't release it on any of the discs, and it was pulled (?) from the website. That seems unlikely to be included here.

EDIT: Oh, I guess the 3-disc also included the scripts for both this version and Jackson's attempt to get the film made in 1996. I don't see those on the list here. And I suppose one could argue that Jackson's recreation of the 1933 spider-pit sequence *should* be included with this film (it annoys me that it's not there), but it gets included with the original instead.

Is this an extended edition or will this new King Kong release simply have bonus features?

I absolutely love Peter Jackson's King Kong, but it's long enough as is.

I would easily snap this up if it was a 3D conversion, but since that will never happen I'll most likely pass.

It's pretty clear from the specs that it contains both versions.

I agree that King Kong 2005 is long enough as it is, but the things I would cut out are in both versions. The swamp sequence in the extended cut is really indispensable to me. As a result, I choose that version every time.

Is one of them the episode with Bryan Singer?

So the same exact Blu-ray disc from the current release -- with the DVD and then a new Blu-ray disc with all the bonus Material?

Is that right? So the only reason to buy this if you have the current release is for the bonus content?

"New bonus disc..."

**** off, Universal. That bonus content was on the dvd release of the extended edition of king kong.

Dont get me wrong. Ill buy this for a good price, but I dont like them advertising the bonus disc like its something new. Its just the same old featyres on a blu-ray disc.

I'm glad it's on a BD at least. I wish Warner would get a clue and put all those LOTR EE appendices on a BD or two, rather than all those DVD's

Yeah just to have those LOTR docs in AVC on 3 blurays would be nice. But WB are apparently treating LOTR with the cold shoulder now. Idk if you heard, but supposedly Jackson wanted money to do new documentaries and new special features and to include new deleted material for the new LOTR release, but WB refused to pay for it and they wouldnt allow him to access the archived material. Instead they released the same stuff weve had for years and bundled it with that stupid shelf and slapped an absurd price on it. Considering that, I doubt they will spend the money to those put the old special features on blu-ray. Its amazing how quickly they forget what Jackson and LOTR did for them.

UHD is actually selling really well for this early in its life-cycle, the studios are really surprised and pleased. Support for the format has been pretty solid and robust, some people just seem to be super impatient about EVERYTHING getting a UHD release too, which isn't going to happen for a long time, if ever.
