Very helpful thread. And luckily the two UHDs I have so far are both from 4k sources. I'm trying hard not to "upgrade" any 2k upconverts, though I might cave if prices start to sink.

My blu-ray collection numbers about 220 of the greatest films ever made, IMO, and I watch them on a 50-inch Panasonic plasma. And, as a movie loving cranky old man, I'm waiting for UHD discs and equipment to shake out the cobwebs before I add new movies to my collection.
I won't buy a UHD TV unless I know there's no motion blur on sports telecasts or on 4k discs. I won't buy any UHD discs unless they are pure native 4k format. Therefore, what am I looking for on the package when I buy a 4k movie? I don't want a movie that's been upscaled to 4k. How is it indicated on a disc package? Thanks! To clarify, many movies released in blu-ray format over the years turned out to be poor imitations. So, just because the movies listed, for example, in Post #1 indicate 4K UltraHD on the front cover, how do I know they're not simply upscaled to 4K? Last edited by rjg77vett; 12-13-2016 at 12:16 PM. I get you thinking, I had the opinion too, but dont go into saying only buying 4K masters. The 2K to 4K has looked great, and some of the true 4K stuff not as much. It reminds me of 3D where people avoided conversions, where conversions are actually quite nice and some true 3D has less impact.

As good as conversion is the key, which is what I meant. So, if 2k to 4K transfers can look as good as some 4K DI's, and some true 3D only matches some great 2D conversion, why go thru life saying you will ONLY buy a "true 4K" movie and only a "real 3D" movie?
Makes no sense to me. I started like saying no to 3D conversions and no to less than 4K DI, but have since learned it is a poor stance. Now the debate is, well maybe the true 3D and the 4K Di were just poorly done. OK, I get that, but once again, no reason to knock conversions when they can be done well. Best thing to do is read the blu-ray reviews, and then buy, stop worrying about paper specs. |
