To answer your question, YES. The movie was produced by Penthouse and featured some of their "employees" in scenes.

Ray, you've never seen Caligula before? You disappoint.

Anyway, I'm gonna go give it a re-watch as this thread has got me in the mood. Ta ta for now.

What has always amazed me is that they got such respected actors as Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud and Helen Mirren to appear in this film.

As to Ray's question, I've walked out of 2 films at the cinema: Forrest Gump, for being too boring; and Caligula, for being too gross. I'm not religious, very liberal & open minded, but Caligula was just too disgusting for me. I won't spoil it for those who have been fortunate too never have seen it, but the scene where something is thrown to the dogs for a treat is the point where I said "That's it, I've had enough" and walked out.

Does getting the X rating here in Australia for a 1984 VHS release answer your question?

Actually, here's the article by Refused Classification.com detailing its censorship history in Australia- http://www.refused-classification.co...gula-1979.html

I'll put it this way! If you've watched a pornographic movie, there is nothing in Caligula that you've haven't seen before, male and female.

My last comment on Caligula, I promise - If you've watched a pornographic movie featuring brother-sister incest, female-female & male-male action, bondage, S&M, extreme anal penetration, and genital mutilation, there is nothing in Caligula that you haven't seen before.

I always watch the pre release cut from the blu ray and it plays like a real movie to me.

I think CALIGULA deserves at least the same amount of respect as the recent HARD TO BE A GOD or at worst SATYRICON.

The set pieces are fantastic, it has that amazing and FUNNY Gore Vidal script, top notch design and acting...

I'm a sucker for these movies that make you ask "How the f*** did this ever get made? ". Movies like Troll 2, Garbage Pail Kids, Howard the Duck, Happiness of the Kutakaris, The Room, the list goes on and on. I feel like I have to own them.....

I once had the opportunity to obtain the stateside blu-ray of this scuzzy gem, but bizarrely passed on it, much to my own regret.

I did eventually buy it after finding the Arrow blu-ray at the same place months later, but boy...I wish I could hear that Malcolm McDowell commentary track.

If ever there was a movie to watch with your soon to be in-laws, this is it. Give your father in law a fist bump, your mother in law a slap on the rump, press play. After a few minutes, ask if they want pop corn and some sparkling wine. At various points, give them a nudge, tell em, that looks fun or it doesn't work like that in my bedroom.

Just finished watching it for the third ever time. My girlfriend was present for the first half hour and was really getting into it, but she had to head to bed because she has an early shift tomorrow (or rather today). Her commentary consisted of: how much she relates to John Gielgud's character, questioning why a lot of the extras are deformed, and professing her love for men's legs.

You don't actually see it though so it doesn't count as "graphic".

Wow, lucky, that's all I can say. My wife still hasn't forgiven me for Killer Joe and a few other things. Didn't even get to the rough portions of A Clockwork Orange. But somehow seems unaffected by Sons of Anarchy's prison scenes. I know it wasn't graphic, but implied. Law & Order SVU is also a no go. Tetsuo's girlfriend scene in Akira greatly upset her too. Lady bits surgery videos from Dr Miami Snapchat are also in her good graces.

It's funny what people can tolerate and not. I'm calls to the matter, I've seen my insides outside my body, lost others, and picked up my parts. The news still gets to me though. It's by far, the most offensive thing on the TV

I totally agree. I don't mind sex in films, I don't even mind fairly explicit sex, but Caligula was disgusting. There was nothing joyful, loving or even erotic about the sex scenes. I didn't walk out because I was with a friend who wanted to stay, but I really wanted to go.

That was the first time I got screwed by thinking that if Olivier was in something, it was probably good. I was in London many years ago and I noticed there was a play called "Time" written by Dave Clark (of the Dave Clark Five) and Olivier's name was above the title. So I bought a ticket. It turns out Olivier wasn't performing in the show -- he played a smoky projected apparition. And the show sucked. That was the second time I got screwed by Olivier.

I'm surprised the "famous" actors who were in Caligula didn't sue afterwards for ruining their reputations. As I remember it, most of those actors weren't actually in most of the sex scenes, aside from a random passing nude body. The sex scenes were mostly added afterwards.
