I would say it has to do with escapism.

I think that about sums it up. Even people who play them for the challenge, I think on some level just want to be good at something, or feel like they accomplished something, in order to feel better about themselves.

Look at it this way: Pay $3000 to go on a one week trip to Hawaii, or pay $3000 for an entertainment setup that will provide you what could be over 150 hours of vacation time with just one game alone. Any time you want to go on a new vacation, you can drop down $60 to go wherever you want, and DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. Take Fallout 3, for instance? Want to go slaughter countless innocents and defile yourself with women? Want to be a complete saint, and save every person you come across (and not double-cross the android after you get his plasma rifle.) Games like Oblivion are just as beautiful (IMO) as a trip to Hawaii, too. Looking at it this way, I've gone on more visual vacations in my life than any businessman that travels all the time....

I see what you're getting at and agree that investing in your home is a great way to enjoy yourself year round, but having been to Hawaii on three separate occasions, I suggest it be on everyone's bucket list. While video games are extremely enjoyable and a great way to "escape," There are some things you simply must experience in person. I mean, you only live once..

+1

video games are great, but you don't need to drop $3k to enjoy them. a memory like that of a vacation to hawaii is priceless. it also is therapy to the soul and mind.

Indeed, a game can be a good way of getting away from reality. You're in another world, helping some cause, finding treasures, solving puzzles and so on.

another reason is probably because they release video games for like every person known to man from stuff like solitare for computers to stuff like Dead Space or Grand Theft Auto. just so many different genres of video games like racing, RPGs, fighting, puzzles, you name it and its there. then these companies make games for all of these genres and then basically you just get so involved with the game where you dont even want to leave your house or even your couch and just play video games of genres you enjoy.

There is a very light coating of crack on all games and controllers. It slowly seeps into you. The AAA titles are coated in heroin.

There is a fine line between love and hate. My incredible love for LBP is quickly becoming a hate because of 3 levels that I just can't seem to complete without dying! I NEED ALL TROPHIES. Nothing is more painful to me right now than having to select that "restart level" option from the pause menu screen!!!

I think that it's because of several reasons. You want to experience the best of what either Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo have to offer you. You have to think in many games, either how to solve a puzzle or just have to get rid of the enemy. Some games out there are a good stress reliever. You want to put on a good show with multiple players. Some people out there think that video games are a waste of time, waste of money, make you crazy, whatever. That is a bunch of bs as most of us know.

just because they give you the opportunity to do things you would never be able to do in real life! Also the challenge of trying to conquer the game, that's what keeps me coming back
