The Shallows is in the same cinematic tradition as John Carpenter and has a similar budget (dramatically less than some of his films) and a director with similar genre history. A $5-20 million dollar budget is considered a very low budget for a wide release film.

I don't know what to tell you bud. It's a low budget genre film with a B horror plot.

I'm willing to admit that my adoration of Blake might have had something to do with my opinion of the film. But it's certainly nowhere near the whole story. I thought it was a very beautiful film, for one. The cinematography was great. And I also admired how tight it was -- nothing was wasted. And Blake was great in it.

That's cause so many love it. So a few select gotta go against the grain and hate it with a passion.

Typical Internet thing to do.

My roomie loved it in theaters, so I set aside time to watch it with him on the Apple TV this past weekend. Solid flick, through and through.

Blake was great this. I see a Fangoria Chainsaw, MTV Movie, Saturn and Teen Choice award nominations in her future.

Finally got a chance to see this tonight and it was okay at best. Some acted like this was a kind of modern masterpiece with an award-worthy tour de force performance. I thought it was kind of average and while I have nothing against Blake Lively personally, any number of actresses could have done this movie just as well. Hardly a "she was born to play this role" situation like some acted it was. The cinematography was nice, although some sequences got a little too annoyingly artsy for me. And the ending was . . . ugh. It was terrible. I almost burst out laughing when
[Show spoiler]the shark just impaled itself on some rebar
and thought to myself "WTH? That's it?!" Decent enough (and far more drama drama than action/horror, the way the ads sold it) but not something I'd bother watching again.

Not award worthy performance but in a way it is a tour de force performance. Lively has never really outshine her acting range like she did here. This has been her best performance.

Melissa George would have been my pick for the role.

Does anyone know if The Shallows was ever marketed as inspired by a true story? I just read a story from the latest Reader's Digest which is an excerpt from the author's book, and it's pretty clear that The Shallows is inspired by her true story. I'm not seeing any writing credits, or anything else to suggest that they're giving credit to her though. To me, it's pretty blatant.

Purchase here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UBXH2RA

Here are just some of the most obvious similarities

Real name: Nicole
Movie name: Nancy

Real profession: Nurse
Movie profession: Medical student

Real location of attack: beach in Cancun Mexico while on vacation
Movie location: beach in Mexico while on vacation

Real life story: She was playng volleyball with friends, and she decided to stay out a little longer by herself to swim. She is seen by two local guys on jet skis who warn her about sharks in the area.

Movie story; She decides to stay out later than she should and surf. She is seen by two local guys in the distance who are surfing, and try to warn her about sharks.

Real life attack: The shark bites into her leg, and also bites off her arm
Movie attack: The shark bites into her leg

So I can't see this being just another coincidence, yet I'm not seeing any discussions about the real life incident. Obviously the movie had to fictionalize a whole lot to make it a movie, but I have little doubt that the writers got whiff of this real story and decided to embellish it, likely without any credit or financial payments to the real life person. I would not be surprised to see a lawsuit pop up about this sooner or later.

The Shallows was never advertised to be "based on true story" or "based on actual events".
