The site grinds my browser to a halt, I would actually visit there more often if it wasn't such a chore to do so. Yeah, I could turn off Java but then that makes things like quoting and liking and adding attachments etc a pain in the arse so I just don't bother with it these days.

You do purrty good .

Geoff, to further your ‘edumacation’ to an even higher level, if you can get up to Newbury in early May, non-members can attend this free upcoming HDR event (from the horses' mouths, so to speak), so register and mark your calendar if you’re a traveling man with time….https://www.smpte.org/sections/unite...d-hlg-post-nab

BT.2100 (see Annex 2 of https://www.itu.int/rec/R-REC-BT.2100 ) embodies conversions (which as currently written in the 2100 Recommendation, may cause some issues in retaining identical appearance of content on matching monitors, but there are possible solutions ) anyway, conversions allow, for instance, if a Hollywood motion picture is delivered to a broadcaster in PQ, it can be converted to HLG for delivery to consumers....

HLG….
caveat being I didn’t set it up and I don’t have official (100%) confirmation of that from Andy at the BBC.

Regardless, unless the presentation was to demonstrate the prowess of their HLG -> PQ conversion or the projector utilized (https://tech.ebu.ch/news/2017/01/pts...f-uhd-with-hdr )
simply wasn’t HLG capable, I think showing the HDR 10 (PQ-based) version would have been contrary to the very spirit of the screening last evening.

Contribution 142 to the respective Working Party -> https://www.itu.int/md/R15-WP6C-C-0142/en will serve as a nice template for a future publicly accessible BBC HDR document about color volume to help educate folks further on this topic.

The only thing to worry about is that which won't be named.

That it doesn't have 12 bit Dolby Vision encoding. HDR10, especially static HDR10, can be hit and miss.

Default HDR format software & CompuTV

Coexistence of different HDR formats within a TV is technically possible, because HDR formats are just software and modern TV are compuTV (computer + TV)!

Matt McRae, CTO of Vizio (i.e. a Dolby Vision-compliant TV manufacturer), wrote that "Dolby Vision is a format + processing/mapping software" and there is no specific Dolby Vision hardware chip.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lc...l#post43311322

Like HDR10, Dolby Vision can be implemented on a SoC (i.e. computer System-on a-Chip): the SoC is a hardware & software computer system, and the SoC hardware is not specifically designed for Dolby Vision as well as for HDR10 or any other HDR format.

However, a Dolby Vision capable SoC shall have sufficiently powerful processing due to the massive level of Dolby Vision processing.
In particular, the HEVC decoding should be hardware accelerated.

Let's take an example: the AmLogic S912 is an off-the-shelf SoC with built-in Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG features.
http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/04/...pecifications/

The Amlogic S912 SoC is composed of many sub-components such as the main processors (i.e. multi-core CPU), the GPU and a lot of co-processors
such as the Amlogic Video Engine AVE-10 with dedicated hardware decoders and encoders including in particular 10-bit HEVC / VP9 decoders supporting multiple video decoding sessions,
or such as the Video Post-Processing Engine (i.e. Video Output Unit) with built-in Dolby Vision / HDR10 / HEVC HLG HDR functions using the HEVC decoding services provided by the Amlogic Video Engine AVE-10.

VP9-PQ / VP9-HLG YouTube HDR software can be added, running on the multi-core CPU and using the 10-bit VP9 Profile 2 decoding services provided by the Amlogic Video Engine AVE-10.

Dolby Vision is currently the most complex HDR format due to its dynamic metadata display adaptation and its 12-bit dual layer architecture.
Therefore, if a TV SoC is powerful enough to support Dolby Vision, this TV SoC is able to support any other HEVC HDR format.

As TV becomes computer, various HDR format software can coexist within a compuTV!
CompuTV, welcome to the Moore’s law world, i.e. the doubling of processor performance every 18 months!

If they want to promote the worthiness of HLG as opposed to PQ, they had better become more proactive as Dolby is now vigorously competing for the live production market too, desiring to be the format of choice in that realm also.

When I was at IBC, Dolby had a demo in their booth of Dolby Vision and HLG next to each other running test footage from BT Sport and Sky attempting to prove that DV is as applicable to live television as it is to recorded content like movies. Hinting at some of their approach (essentially metadata-less intensive until the final playout) as later outlined by Pat G. at the SVG summit last December in New York….

I think it would also behoove the BBC to publicly publish in layman’s language more as to the merits (versatility ) of HLG with viewing under non reference viewing conditions, expanding upon the ‘non reference’ part of this ITU contribution….https://www.itu.int/md/R15-WP6C-C-0141/en , i.e. what/how much correlation does their scientific testing show with low as opposed to high ambient lighting.

Everything they’ve shown publicly so far has been characterized by test layouts with a background illuminated with a 5 nits CIE D65 illuminant measuring the ambient lighting to be 1.15 lux perpendicular to the screen with this lighting. Personally, I don’t think they’re (the BBC) sufficiently expressing to the public the versatility of their HDR approach.

One important element of HLG/WCG is that it can be broadcast OTA and OTT with the FHD/SDR signal from the capture camera to our homes and the broadcasters do not need to invest in any new equipment as most if not all ENG and studio cameras, switching and transmission equipment is HLG/P3 capable over the 1080 signal.

The broadcasters may need a second shader to properly set the peak luminance.

Dolby Vision and HDR 10 require the UHD signal.
