for the first 100-150 hours the screen must be zoomed in, no black bars on hd or sdtv. no gaming as there will be static images.

keep all of the settings under 50 and under no circumstances put the tv in vivid mode. follow those rules for the first 100-150 hours and you will be fine. the idea is to create even phosphor burn at the beginning of the tv's life

In regards to the calibration of the set i would not worry too much about it until after the break in period. There are calibration threads amongst these forums and there are calibration threads for your tv over at the avs forums as well.

If you have any questions just let me know. i have the 50pz80u tv and have about 3000 hours on my set now and have never run into any problems with it

Lots of reading, but it is well worth it! Especially if you really want to get the most out of your new tv

those settings are fine. but if you want the most accurate color pallet select cinema and warm for your settings. just make sure, brightness etc are all set to 50 or below for the break in period

In addition if you have no patience for counting the first 100-150 hours you can download the plasma break-in DVD for free.

http://www.eaprogramming.com/downloa...nload_main.htm

It's available in .iso and VIDEO_TS formats to download.

Set your DVD player to upscale, set aspect ratio to 16:9 (very important to not set to 4:3)

It runs through for 24 hours. Press play at the same time each day for 5 days, biggety bam.

Break-in a plasma...complete and utter hogwash. The next gimmick will be to break-in speakers...oh wait, there are threads on that line of nonsense, too.
Do what you want...that's just my opinion.

Another thing you can do is simply download the images from the link on the site Doby linked. Copy these images to a stick or card and play them as a slide show either through your set (if capable) or your player (works with PS3, not sure about others). To me, this was easier than properly burning the DVD, as I had trouble doing that correctly with the software I had (or didn't have).

I always love your well-thought out counterpoint posts. They're so full of solid, empirical data.

Given that he wants to break in his plasma, what exactly are you offering here in this thread?

I gave up on "breaking in" my plasma on the first day. I use it for everything including the computer. I have fallen asleep leaving the TV on while watching movies 3 times. I probably have the cheapest plasma ever and have not had any problems. lots of Image Retention but no Burn in.

And breaking in a plasma has how many factual and scientific articles stating it's necessary? For everyone you find, I'll produce one that say's it's crap.

Like I said, he can do what he wants, people can make their own choice and we can disagree to disagree. But I'll continue to offer my opinion on anything in this forum that people ask about.

Well, Panasonic recommends it for their own TVs...

4. What is the "break-in" period and what should I do during the break-in period to minimize any risk of image retention?

When your plasma TV is initially installed, the first 100 hours of use is known as the "break-in period." During this time, to minimize any risk of image retention, you should:

Make sure the plasma TV is in a viewing mode (aspect ratio) that completely fills the screen. The panel is shipped in this condition, in what is called the "Just" mode.
Turn down the Picture setting (in the Picture menu) to +0.
Briefly engage the 4:3 mode and confirm the side bars are set to "Mid", or "Bright". This can be adjusted in the Set Up menu.
Always return the display mode that fills the screen (such as Just, Zoom, Full, or H-FILL).
Try not to view channels with stationary backgrounds or logos for extended periods of time.
Avoid extended display of static images (video games, computer images, DVD title screens, etc.).

Quick question, what about black bars on top and bottom while watching blu ray discs, will they mess up the break in process?

Thanks

He didn't ask about the validity of it though, so again I ask, given that he wants to break in his plasma, what exactly are you offering here in this thread?

Let's start with the Panny one above, and the other links that Brett posted. They've already started me off without doing any work.

My point is, you come in, trash someone else's opinion without anything to back it up but your own, and condemn anyone who doesn't blindly follow you. Provide some links and proof of your position or you're just trolling for attention, really.
