I had no idea that even existed. Some of those early Japanese SACDs are very rare today and often feature unique masterings.

Crackpots is not the word that came to my mind, but yes lets go with that. Surely that price has to be a big mistake, if not then OMG. At that price the entire band should come over and play LIVE in your living room every time you want to listen to it, however the SACD would sound better.

Ordered Best of the Doors off Amazon via JapanCD back in Nov.

Sent with no tracking number, but an ETA of a week ago which still hasn't arrived. So I email JapanCD and they're like 'oh ya, a lot of our Canadian customers didn't get their orders' - what did the ship strike an iceberg and sink?

So they're now offering to ship me another, which while nice, means it'll be likely close to 5 months from when I originally ordered.

Honestly, it wasn't any better than listening to the CD. With the previous release I could totally hear the difference, but with this one....no, in a blind listening test, I couldn't tell the difference.

I was able to pick up a Pioneer BDP-80FD blu ray player off amazon and have successfully ripped my SACDs. Anybody looking archive their SACD collection can get that player.

I remember reading about the process somewhere, but you can rip SACDs now using that specific player?!

This post is probably more about the packaging, but I got the 2017 Japanese 7" mini LP SACD edition of Yessongs in the post yesterday, courtesy of CD Japan. It is spectacular:



This series of hybrid SACD releases from Japan have been superb. I have Close to the Edge in both this and the US Musical Fidelity edition and the Japanese one edges it I reckon. Tales from Topographic Oceans is also spectacular

This, like the previous normal sized mini LP edition, uses the triple fanfold design that Roger Dean planned for the original LP release but was unable to do because of print technology at the time.

Every single review I have read on these hybrid SACD releases from Japan have been great. I actually think I will use them next especially on the YES releases.

Yes you can. It has to be a specific chip and only a handful of players have that chip. I believe the Oppo BDP 103 can rip as well, but it's way more expensive. The Pioneer I got is the cheapest option for SACD ripping.

The 103 and 103 D can (I have done so on the latter, it's pretty straightforward). The UDP 203 cannot.

For Rock music, yes the pickings are slim, however there are a few that are good releases and the price is not bad at all.
