Oh my dear sweet Lord, I would love to see a Criterion release of Touching the Void. That movie blew me away when I saw it at an indie theater years ago.

Martin Scorsese Announces Initiative to Restore Classic African Films — Watch Trailer

Quote:
Martin Scorsese has launched an initiative to locate, restore and preserve classic African movies. Scorsese’s The Film Foundation has partnered with the Pan African Federation of Filmmakers (FEPACI) and UNESCO to create The African Film Heritage Project (AFHP). As part of this initiative, 50 films with “historic, artistic and cultural significance,” will be restored.

The initiative will be lead by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, which was established in 2007 “to ensure that the most vulnerable titles don’t disappear forever… Along the way, we’ve come to understand the urgent need to locate and preserve African films title by title in order to ensure that new generations of filmgoers —African filmgoers in particular— can actually see these works and appreciate them,” the renowned filmmaker said in a statement.

“Africa needs her own images, her own gaze testifying on her behalf, without the distorting prism of others, of the foreign gaze saddled by prejudice and schemes,” added FEPACI Secretary General Cheick Oumar Sissoko. Watch the announcement trailer below.

Mine shipped in a cardboard mailer when I got one/two movies and in a box when I ordered more than that in the past.

Saw it at the cinema too and I recently found a copy of the book. I would love a Criterion edition of this one.

Do you think they will do a remaster of "Seven Samurai" from 4K?

I wouldn't doubt it.

There's a rumor that Chungking Express is going to be re-released in its newest 4K remastering. I guess if that's possible anything is.

Mine, too, slipped in a cardboard mailer. Mildred Pierce and Roma, with Dekalog sandwiched in between. The discs were also packed between cardboard bookends inside the mailer. Dekalog is in perfect mint condition. Not even a hint of a corner dinged.

Yes, but the difference between these two titles is that Seven Samurai is still in print, and Chungking Express isn't.

Yes, and Criterion now apparently owns the rights to his catalogue.

Taking this potential fact out of the picture, I'd say there is a good chance that Criterion will start releasing and re-releasing certain films in 4K with the increase in 4K technology and innovations and a continued demand for the release of films in this newer format.

Any reason why this site and Dr. Svet are not reviewing all of the titles coming out? They are not keeping up at all. #sad

I've already discussed it with Svet.

All of the titles that were never reviewed (including those films already released and those films scheduled to be released in the future) will eventually be reviewed. It's just a matter of when.

Default One Eyed Jacks

I watched One Eyed Jacks yesterday afternoon. I thought it was a fun watch. I consider it a successful blind buy, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. Brando, who I’d probably name if pressed to choose the ‘greatest actor’ of all-time, was a little flat. Perhaps he was busy with directorial duties that he failed to really give a characterization to Rio.
[Show spoiler]He is supposed to go through some kind of transformation during the film
and I see it in the script and hear it in the dialogue. I just didn’t quite feel it in the performance.

Quite a bit of melodrama, too, which I didn’t really expect. On the other hand, the film looks gorgeous. The cinematography is excellent and the plot is a good deal of fun.

I know these films don’t necessarily warrant comparison, but for whatever reason I thought of The Man From Laramie. I’d give OEJ the edge there. …and I thought of The Big Country only in that I feel the need to rank films I’ve seen. I’d say TBC was a better Western.

Always fun though, with Brando, no matter what, so I’ll surely revisit it and read about the production history which is supposed to be quite interesting.

Are you asking if they will re-release it on blu-ray from a new 4k scan, or if they will release it on a 4k/UHD disc?
