Oh man, this is amazing news! The UK version is no better than the DVD and I've not picked up the US version as of yet.

Really hope they put the hour long Mark Kermode documentary Man Trap: The Making of Straw Dogs on the extras. Might not be the most insightful piece on the film, but great stories from the cast and crew and Kermode revisiting the locations with Susan George.

Straw Dogs is one of the most disturbing movies in my collection, but I will be upgrading from the MGM Blu-ray to the Criterion Blu-ray as soon as possible. It's difficult to watch, but it's so effective that I revisit it on occasion.

Would be great if Criterion could get the Katy Haber commentary track from the British blu.

Warner's Peckinpah box-set on DVD was outstanding, long past time for them to get those titles out on blu

It's possible, at least hinted at by Mr. Lime in the Kino thread

"Rebecca" has been rumored from Criterion for some time now so it may be just a matter of time.

I hope Rebecca, Notorious & Spellbound do get out again, those old discs go for silly money now

With the Kino deal and now subbing out to criterion again, it seems Disney Enterprises reliazed that the psyical format market isnt at its prime anymore for them to release themselves. Digital is where theyre going to as its gaining popluarity and they dont have to worry about massive backstock on the slow sellers.

However, theres still some demand for psyical with the DMC for the die hards. Plus they still do put out recent releases and rehash the preminum titles, but i think over time they'll be iecencing out more of the non essentials (even titles previously on DVD) to smaller video labels as they could get more per liecenced title rather than put it all out themselves but have losses if the title has massive backstock and further reductions.

Just to save people the trouble of looking.

There's really nothing wrong with the current MGM Blu-rays of Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound.

That said, I'd double-dip in a second if Criterion were to release them on Blu-ray.

No surprise there, been waiting patiently for this. No doubt it will be a 4K scan too.

I'd like some clarification too. I believe the 2004 MGM is the uncut version at 118 minutes. The Criterion DVD is listed at 117 minutes. Not sure if there is really a difference. IMDB lists the original cut version at 113 minutes.

The Criterion DVD was never cut as far as I know. The rape scene is exactly the same as the old Anchor Bay DVD I had as well, including any of the gorey bits at the end.

Oooh. Just a few weeks before the Criterion sale at Barnes & Noble too (even though they're going to neuter it again ).
