Germany German Releas of Dances with wolves

The german version of Kevin Costners masterpiece is scheduled to be released on December 5th.
It features the long version (235 min, is encoded with the mpeg-avc codec and boasts a dolby true hd 7.1 score in englisch and german.
You'll find the details here.
http://www.bluray-disc.de/filme/aben...dem-wolf-tanzt

It ist announced as Region B, but that hasn't been confirmed yet - german publisher and studios have been wrong about region code info in the past.

That's very interesting. It's rumoured to be in preparation in the US, but I don't know which version that's going to be.

I suspect the website is showing Region B simply because it's a European release. It probably means nothing regarding whether it will be region-locked or not - we'll only find out once it's actually released.

I don't fancy having to leave the subs on for the Native American dialogue, 'cause I doubt this'll have English subs just for that portion of speech.

They get their information from press servers of german publishers, but you might be right. The only really reliable source for region coding is www.blurayregioncodes.com

Btw: I just watched the review disc. Picture Quality is awesome and at least worth 4-5 points. Although the codec uses only low bitrates (< 20Mb/s) the picture is quite good. The transfer is clean, features a spot on contrast and only lacks a little detail. Very good transfer, recommendable.

It has english subs, you can either leave them on or off, tested it personally

Yes but if you have them switched on, do you get English subs even during the English dialogue? The point is that English-speaking viewers will need the English subs during the dialogue in the native American language (Lakota) but *not* during the English dialogue.

No, there is an option to show only subs for the dialogue of the Lakota

Ah excellent. It sounds like they have actually thought about this release! If it does turn out to be region-free, I will probably order this as there seems to be no immediate sign of the half-promised US edition (and we don't know which version it would be anyway).

Thanks for the information.

It is quite good. It uses Mpeg AVC with surprisingly low bitrates (almost never exceding 20 Mb/s), but it adds up to a satisfying Blu-ray transfer. Contrast is spot on, colours looking natural and black levels are quite good. There is no grain or electronic noise, but the sharpness and the level of detail could be better. The awesome panorama shots of nature like How the West was won or The Searchers are therefore out of its league. On a 10 Score the picture is rated 8 - which is quite good, i wasn't disappointed. I just hoped it would be an outstanding transfer, which it isn't - it very good, but not excellent.

They didn't use the original aspect ratio (2,20:1) but framed it in 2,35:1.

My review of dancing with wolves (if anybody is interested and understands german) will be published on bluraydisc.de today or tommorrow.

It is the long version which is the interesting one. I hope the long version comes to the French speaking countries of Europe soon

I have this disc too.

The picture quality is indeed very good.

However, I'm a bit sad that they didn't include the (shorter) Director's Cut as well and that there are not a lot of bonus features like on the previously released Special Edition DVD by Kinowelt.

A double-dip might be coming there in the future...

DANCES WITH WOLVES was filmed on 35mm stock in Panavision. The aspect ratio is correct at 2.35:1. The 2.21:1 ratio you refer to is the AR of the 70mm blow-up from 35mm elements that was made in the 1990s. The High Definition master used for the Blu-ray was made, as it should, from a 35mm element, and has therefore the correct AR.
