This show still scared the hell out of me when I was a kid..we used to watch the marathon on the SciFi channel every new years and I still remember having trouble sleeping when I was 7 or 8 years old!

For me, "Death Ship" and "The New Exhibit" were always the most unsettling.

Default Removing the Discs --

Has anyone figured out how to remove the discs from their mountings without possibly breaking them?

I hadn't seen it until several months back on Netflix. Watched almost all of the episodes, though a few of them sounded less interesting from the synopsis menu and I skipped around a bit. I'd probably watch them all if i had the blu set, though. Great show and it's easy to see where the inspiration came for many future movies.

The only way to watch these is on Blu-Ray IMO. They look excellent.

Are they scary? If you are a millennial who gets excited about cats jumping into shot or doors banging shut or to be spoon fed horror, nope.
If you like to use your imagination, yep it can be scary.

I remember the opening, in the woods, of 'Tales from the Darkside' scaring me to hell years ago - in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, I watched the show, for the first time in the 2000's on a Sci-Fi marathon, and it's terrible. I mean it's pretty bad. One of the worst anthology series.

I expected to like it because I liked Tales from the Crypt, but that's much better.

The Twilight Zone is something that is hit and miss for me. Maybe I'm too young. I like I Love Lucy; I like The Three Stooges; I like The Addams Family from the 60's.

However, in its defense, The Twilight Zone is miles better than Tales from the Darkside and Monsters. And those were 30 years newer.

I would put, for me, The Twilight Zone in second place below Tales from the Crypt.

Sorry guys... I'm just a huge Crypt Keeper junkie and love his character too much.

-----------------

Tales from the Crypt - Episodes are all over the place. Scattered A-episodes mixed with B, C, D and even a couple F episodes. Pros - Love the Cryptkeeper to death. I always loved his intros. My favorite episodes tend to come from the 1st, 2nd and 4th seasons. Seasons 5-7, for me, are almost unwatchable.

The Twilight Zone - A little worse for me, but there are episodes I like.

Tales from the Darkside and Monsters are unwatchable, for me, and I am suppose to be the target audience for them.

I was 10 when this episode was shown and it did scare me. The part that got to me was
[Show spoiler]The way his transformation was filmed-with each pillar he passed, the more demonic he became.
The off-screen, left to your imagination, final scene also messed with me.

Maybe you're not though?

I get the impression those shows knew they were low budget "crap". They're slathered in cheesiness and black humour and if you like that, there's lots to enjoy. Tales From the Darkside and Monsters can't be taken seriously much of the time.

Night Gallery on the other hand really jumped the shark in season 3. There are some really good Serling episodes in it still (and wouldn't be out of place in The Twilight Zone, even if some are maybe a little grislier than late 50s/early 60s TV standards, but boy, the Laird enforced comedy stuff gets particularly bad and tired. Isn't it funny! (Not).

The original series or the 80's series?
Having seen both over the years, I agree with others in that they're mostly about the strange more than the scary. How weird can things get in an episode is usually the main appeal of the series, or something thought provoking.

The Outer Limits is more focused on monsters and horror more often, so if that's what you're looking for, the original series is interesting, and the updated 90's version is very good.

I agree, there are a few rare gems in Tales from the Darkside that are true horror, like Halloween Candy and In the Closet, some weird classics in there, but a few too many goofy comedy intended skits that weren't dark at all and totally lost the intention of the series being "From the Darkside". The rebooted series never got off the ground and was turned into a comic book instead I believe. Too bad as I was looking forward to it.

Tales from the Crypt has some good monsters in there now and then, though it does have a heavy dose of humor in there.

Tales of the Dim is a small, short animated series focused mostly on horror and monsters online. Plenty of other online horror series too.

For some scary stuff if you like the supernatural, A Haunting series season 1 through 7 are great if you don't mind the reenactment style, and then there's the classic Unsolved Mysteries Ghosts series, which has a few scary episodes in there, along with Unsolved Mysteries UFOs.

"Scary" is not the word I would use. Possibly the least scary show ever on television; there are episodes of I Love Lucy less comical than some of TTZ at it's goofiest.

Twilight Zone is meant to unsettle, not frighten. It's a thinking man's show really. The only time I was even slightly startled was Eye of the Beholder, but that's giving away the surprise to say more.

There's something to be said for enjoying classic television. I Love Lucy, Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Outer Limits - there's a lot of depth to the older stuff that isn't there in modern television. Give it a try, but be patient, it's a bit of an acquired taste.
