Don't care either way at this point. It's a great player and for $299 it will still beat the snot out of the Oppo all day long. |

Guys, from a large company (I work for one) saying "we have no plans" means very little.
Its June before DV discs even hit, just give it some time. |

Robert Zohn Big Big thank you for reporting to us regards DV.
Is it possible to find out if the Sony Ultra App will be forth-coming with a firmware update this year. |

Hmmm. Think it may be time for Robert to start having a UHD Player shootout... ![]() Last edited by zubinh; 04-06-2017 at 06:03 PM. |

Is there a list of gear that might get a Dolby Vision update? I've heard it mentioned that Sony TVs with the X1 Extreme chip are likely, but what about Samsung and Philips models?
I know DV has a much higher potential, but is it more beneficial with TVs that have lower than 1000 nits peak brightness than HDR10? As it maps on a scene-by-scene basis and not a feature length basis like HDR10? Last edited by chip75; 04-06-2017 at 07:27 PM. |

As for players, the only ones confirmed to get Dolby Vision are the Oppo 203/205, LG UP970, and Philips BDP7502. |

But yes, the biggest USP of Dolby's format is that it has customised data embedded into the signal which will provide a much more sympathic mapping of the image to the target display, which at the moment appears to be FAR more beneficial to <1000-nit displays than the higher specced ones. Time will tell though, I can't wait for people to start testing DV vs HDR10 on the higher end Sony LCDs. |

You're absolutely right that the consensus was always to have the output be as close to the native encoded signal as possible, but with the usage of 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 making SUCH a difference to the bandwidth of a 4K signal (along with the bit-depth) it seems to have become a much more complicated issue re: how the manufacturers are implementing the extended bit depth of UHD on their players. Choosing between 12 bit and 8 bit is a no brainer, obviously. Ideally, you'd get 10 bit and 4:4:4, though. |

Exactly! No one actually knows what Sony is going to do. And for those of you putting your faith into what a customer service rep said, good luck with that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

And I had someone from Sony tell me that they were, so none of us actually know what Sony is going to do. And we can't rely on what some customer service rep tells us. I've been in this industry for over 20 years, and one thing I know for sure is that these companies are going to do whatever they want, and us consumers are just going to have to deal with it. Guys, Robert is a dealer, little different than a customer service rep...
And like I said, no current plans at a big company can mean several things. It makes no sense to me that their 2016 flagship, as well as 2017 displays will get it and their new players wont. |
