Are .mkv files still forced at 60 frames per second? All previous Blu-ray players had this.

This feels like a premium product, with a sturdy build and a good weight to it. Really easy to set up, and I like what I'm seeing PQ wise. An update was available as soon as I'd connected it to the internet. The OSD is very much the same as Sony's recent BD players, but I like that. It's no frills, but straight to the point.

The only thing I don't like, is that the remote turns on my Region A Sony BD player too. I put up with this when I had a separate Sony Region B player, and was hoping not to repeat it with a new format, but hey ho.
It doesn't have a separate code thingy you can change it to? Maybe that's just a Panasonic thing.

???? I got my UHD TV in 2015. Even then I knew Dolby Vision was coming and that my TV would only handle HDR10. None of it should have been a surprise in 2016.

Literally everything says deep color should be off. Everything! Arg.
Not with the x800. You need it set to on.

I'll wait a couple years when Sony will release a player with Vision and it will probably be down to $149 by then.
Most of the Sony TVs this year are HDR10 only. Only the upper end TVs with the X1 Extreme processor will get Dolby Vision . The majority of their UHD TVs sold will only have HDR10.

Thanks for the early feedback. I'm in a few days away from my return window for the Sony player, and was very curious about the LG player, since it's out in the U.S. this week.

I'm enjoying everything about the Sony so far, but especially the build quality and consistent updates. PQ quality is noticeably a tad better than the Samsung 8500 I was using previously as my primary player. This was especially apparent with the shadow detail on Assassin's Creed 4k, and overall upscaling on BDs.

The Sony feels like such a premium product, that would normally list for $100-200 more. It seems to do everything right and I just can't see Sony leaving money on the table, with there will be a huge push for Dolby Vision this Summer. AV enthusiasts will likely pass this player up in favor of the LG player, and other sub $300 players that may offer DV, but will be inferior in hardware.

Sony seems to be a consumer friendly conscious company. They are the only company to:
1. Offer 4k+3d combo discs
2. Offer a rewards program for free blu rays

As it stands, I will most likely keep the Sony for the foreseeable future.

Only if the TV can't handle it.The Sony TVs have no problem with 12 bit from a UhD BD player. No banding etc.

Of course ideally they should have a 10 bit output option. I can see 12 bit making sense once Dolby Vision Discs arrive. But HDR10 is only 10 bit.

Use the 10bit and 8 bit test patterns. With Deep color set it off, the 10 bit pattern looks like the 8 bit and has banding. With Deep color on auto the 10 bit pattern looks correct and had no banding.

Ok thanks I will keep it on Auto then if that is the correct setting to use which is what seems to be the case according to your test pattern.

Sony x800 PQ observed as a 5...

This was posted today at the AVSFORUM...

It will be a keeper. I watch Rogue one last night 3D good upscale and perfect 3D . Watch UHD movies now u see me 2 , ghostbusters, shallow, passengers and mag 7. All work perfectly no disc errors. Great picture. I tried the two apps on the 970 and no issue but far from being complete. I expect a better selection with firmware updates. This unit will go with my LG Oled tv because of future upgrade of dobyvision. The x800 will go with my Sony 940 d which does not have Dolby vision just hdr10' and I don't think x800 will get it in firmware. The Oppo has been a pain in the ass from day one issues it will be going back to Oppo. The interest part I get 2 player for 600 vs the Oppo for 550. Yes the Sony and the Oppo are built like tanks and yes the build of the LG feels cheaper. If I was rating them it would look like this . Higher the score the better it is .
LG build quality a 3, app feature a 3,lack of issues 5, remote 3, DV 5 , picture 5
Sony build quality a 5, app feature a 3, lack of issues 5, remote 3, DV 1, picture 5
Oppo build quality a 5, app feature a 0 , lack of issues 1, remote 5 , DV 5 , Picture 4
Samsung 8500 quality 3, app feature a 3 , lack of issues 2, remote a 1, DV 0, picture 3

I did own the Sammy for a week and it was returned asap the red issues and over all I hate the curve front. Hope this helps.

After a couple days of great color my issue is back. Changed no settings. Reconfirmed 4:4:4 with Deep Color on but still faded color. There's no way my brief experience with great color was a placebo, since I compared back and forth with the BDs and movielover had the same results. Comparing the same BDs last night showed huge loss of color.

I have no idea WTF is going on and I'm pretty sick of dealing with it. Might just write off UHDs for a month or so and take a break, I dunno.

It is rather frustrating, honestly. There's no real standard for calibration, there's multiple types of HDR in our future, still have to take SDR into consideration, disc players can be problematic still, etc. Ah well. "The price way pay." And all that junk.

No doubt. None of my 4K setups are even DV compliant. I'm going to sit this next evolution out and just enjoy the HDR10 setups I have.

Sorry to hear that Velveteen. I did exactly what you said in your last sentence there, I got so annoyed that I basically wrote it off (as you well know ) and took a few months out, didn't even have a player. But I decided to revisit it, starting off with more restrained settings and everything just clicked into place.

I think I would love the SDR conversion if it wasn't for the black crush. Makes me want to try the Panny. Was just sitting here thinking about selling the Sony (too late to return but I bet I could get close to retail for it) and getting the Panny when it drops in price, or a new model comes out.

I doubt I can stay away too long since I'm so excited when it f**king works.

Everything STILL looks better and more dynamic with HDR turned off, no matter which settings I change.

Have you compared to BD for testing black levels? If it weren't for black crush I'd agree with you, but I lose tons of detail in the blacks no matter what SDR setting I use.

Anyone in Europe got a movie for free with this player? They started selling them over here just now and in some stores it's bundled with a free copy of Inferno 4K.

I have and everything looks great. I don't know a lot about black crush but from what you just said, it means loss of detail in the black areas of the picture and I don't think I've experienced any of that. However I will look at it again tonight.

Interesting. I know you have a radically different TV but I'd love to know your SDR settings and such if you ever feel like typing them out.
