You remember John Williams' or Jerry Goldsmith's or sometimes Alan Silvestri's or James Horner's (when he wasn't cribbing himself) music, but many other composer's scores are forgettable.

I prefer the score for Man of Steel and the similar score in BvS...But SM2 score is the most original and makes great use of Dolby Atmos

The Man of Steel had a score?? I can't remember it to save my life, but I will remember, 'til the end of time, THIS score:

Yeah I love me some Man of Steel but aside from the main theme, the rest isn't all that good. Williams' score trounces it.

Lack of melody and memorable scores is one of my biggest problems in modern movies. It seems to be intentional, I have read many articles and interviews about the deliberate desire to kill melody in movies. It depresses me.

Kill melody? wtf why? Makes no sense. (Not doubting that's what you read, just... why?)

Been a while since I read about it but I believe the gist of it was that melody is seen as "old and cheesy" by younger audiences, and some think it distracts from the visuals. Disgusting!

Most mivies these days could easily swap scores and noone would notice. They are mostly all identical. Sad.

Agree completely. And it is sad. But it's usually relegated to the big ones; smaller movies (typically the Oscar fare) do tend to have some good scores. I wonder if the lack of quality in blockbuster scores has to do with so many movies being sequels, so they're basically recycling older music for the most part anyway, rather than doing a whole lot that's new.

Beautiful scores take time and blockbuster movies rarely get time. Rogue One was made in four weeks. Is it as good as John Williams' work? No. But Williams has a year or more to work on a Star Wars Episode. What Giacchino did with Rogue One is impressive.

Hell, Lorne Balfe was added to Ghost in the Shell at the end of February/beginning of March, and the official score release was delayed or just canceled because of it. (And I pre-ordered it, too...) Even worse, there were still VFX changes two weeks before it premiered.

Hollywood needs to stop rushing.

In regards to James Horner, I was trying to remember a cue from How The Grinch Stole Christmas (when The Grinch lifts up the sleigh at the top of the mountain) and it wouldn't stop crossing over into a theme from The Perfect Storm.

Still can't remember what exactly either one sounded like, it's just a blur. An enjoyable blur, though.

Giacchino's score for Rogue One is fine when considering how little time he had to complete it. But outside of that, when taken on its own, it's really not very good. Wish Desplat had stuck around. I like Giacchino but he's taken over Trek and Jurassic and now he's doing Star Wars and I think he needs to do more original projects.

And Spider-man Homecoming!

Disney Animation, Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, Jurassic Park...

He's spreading himself mighty thin and I too hope he has something original left over in him. Been listening to Jupiter Ascending on repeat lately. Lovely score.

Saw JA but didn't really notice the score, I'll give that one a listen.

JA was recorded before the movie started production, then was cut and jumbled up for the movie. The soundtrack release is as it was recorded.

The score I have loved the most these last few years in blockbuster movies was probably Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There's actual melody there, and some lovely themes. Some moments are so enhanced by it, like when he jumps off the plane thing and lands with his shield dominating the frame.

Outside of blockbusters I really loved the score for Nightcrawler, which made me pull my hair out when I saw a ton of complaints in reviews about how such a strong score didn't "fit the film." Ugh!

Thought the score for the first Captain America was better. That and Iron Man had really nice ones. Coincidentally (or maybe not), they might be the two best MCU movies. Go figure.

Favorite score of the 2010s so far is probably Skyfall, but I'm a Bond nut so take that for what it's worth lol. 127 Hours, Interstellar, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Moonlight, Fury Road, Man from UNCLE, and both the Reznor/Ross/Fincher scores are also up there. Oh, and TFA's score was quite good, too. Not up to par with the preceding Star Wars scores but as far as modern movies go, it's head and shoulders above nearly everything else out there.

Man From UNCLE is so good and so underrated in so many ways. Would love a UHD of that, though it likely will never happen.

In my opinion a good movie should have a score that you can hear even in your car or in a public place and immediately associate to the movie it is linked to. Some examples are Lord of The rings/The Hobbit, Man of Steel/BvS, and Pacific Rim
