Are you really saying that the one is not any better looking than the other?

And really, if there was "lack of texturing" the image would just be a big rectangle of solid color. Having lines and shapes of different colors is a texture, even if there aren't very much intricate patterns or shading.

You might not consider it worthwhile for that, but that doesn't really matter. See: the next paragaph in response to BrianAgenda.

@above: I was just trying to point out that just because you won't buy something doesn't mean the product wouldn't sell regardless. Even if you wouldn't rebuy it on BD for the added resolution, there would definitely be some who would, and then there would be people like me who never got around to getting it on DVD.

I would like them to come on BD but I'll only buy future versions and I won't rebuy as they look fab on DVD as it is.

Default I have an idea...

The standard BD discs are 25 GB to 50 GB right? Why not make an ultimate collection of Family Guy on one disc SD or a few discs HD?

Would this be better?

SD should stay on DVD. Supposedly the new Star Wars spoof is coming to Blu-ray.

Not "supposedly". It is coming to BD.

The quality is another question though.

FG is only animated in SD 4x3 and still his and mcfarlane have absolutly no plan to go widescreen HD at all!

The carnivale of Cartoon look atroucious on Blu-ray even for basic animation. (Monster ALIASING everywhere)... i'am pretty sure this would look the same.

It's a shame because even simple animation can look awesome in HD. Venture Brothers and Southpark are great example of that...

Agreed, Some of the motion and clarity suffers on my DVD FG episodes. I have to turn the TV Motion Enhancer up to HIGH on my Bravia to make it look clearer.

There is nothing wrong with the idea of a Blu Transfer. As with any Standard Def source, it looks a bit cruddy when seen on a large screen even with upscaling turned on. Period. Unless you're watching that incredible new show called "Blank TV Screen"... then, the quality is about the same.

Cheers,

Doc

This season of family guy is being animated in HD at a 4:3 ratio. The first episode of the season Road to the Multi-verse is available in 720p on the Playstation 3 network for download. The difference is actually bigger than you'd think. Especially during the Disney sequence in the episode. Anyone who says this show doesn't benefit from HD is smoking something.

Seriously, guys, this show is rendered in something akin to Flash animation. Blu-ray? really? What's next, demands for 4k restorations of "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist"?

If the show is ever rendered in High-Def, then it might be worth seeing it that way. Until then, DVD continues to have more resolution than this show is even capable of.

lol

If Dr. Katz was shot on film, I wouldn't mind having it rescanned and available on Blu-ray. What's wrong with you people who think that simple line art doesn't look remarkably better at higher resolutions?

Actually, Dr. Katz was rendered on a 486 (no BS, I remember the animator being quite proud of that). It is sub-VGA quality. Ipod video bests it.

I kind of figured the style they used was a digital effect, meaning it would have been hard-rendered in SD resolution.

But my point still stands. If Dr. Katz were available in HD it would be markedly better than SD.

Default it's the new way

Ok, DVD will be as important as VHS is in about 3 years or so. Bluray will be here for as about as long as DVDs were hot. It's the natural progression. It's the new technology for this particular field. Why is everyone trying to ignore that? Even the Beatles understood this concept which is why their music went from Vinyl to 8 track to tape to CD to now straight digital on iTunes. They weren't like, "Oh, I don't really like the sound it gives off on the newer mtypes of media so we're not going to release any newer versions." People are very particular about thier music, movies and TV shows. If your show is good, really good, i.e. Seinfeld, and Family Guy, people will buy it on BR. It sucks to have an amazing HD plasma or LCD TV and watch one of your favorite shows painfully because FOX is too cheap to give them the money to upconvert. Ya, it's a comedy not an action movie, but still i watch a lot more of these comedy tv shows on a regular basis than anything else. It's like buying the nicest suit you've ever seen and having no event to wear it to. If Seth MacFarlane is as brilliant as we know he is, he will get this pretty quickly and start cranking out BR versions... If it's even his call to make, that is.

Why is everyone saying its not coming to blu ray? It hasn't been confirmed yes, but do you all believe once DVD is dead they will keep producing the seasons on an obsolete format? Give it a year or two and I guarantee it will be. Also, if it was pointless to put it on blu ray (which its not) and McFarlane says he doesn't want to then why is Family Guy Darkside on blu ray? Everyone was saying southpark wouldn't be on blu ray but look its newest season is and it looks awesome.

Exactly! How can people possibly think that the Family Guy Seasons won't be coming to Bluray??????? It's obviously going to be eventually. Once DVD is officially dead you think FOX won't ever release one, if not THE, best show they have had on Blu, C'mon people............

It's because the earlier episodes were created digitally in SD.

There will NEVER EVER be HD versions of those episodes.

NEVER EVER.

I think I heard the latest episodes are created in HD and matted to 4:3 (of which the new Star Wars special is among them). They could do HD on BD. But older episodes, if they ever appear on BD, will be 480p or upscaled.

DVD's got a long way to go and will in my opinion run for as long as Blu Ray is viable. It's going to take a very long time to get people to give up DVD. The difference is just not as blindingly obvious to the majority with their (relatively) tiny little TVs, than DVD was to VHS. Convenience is what people are swayed by. Downloads will make them switch, but the infrastructure has a good 5 years to go.

Err, Snow White was filmed on 35mm. That's higher definition than Blu Ray. Anything on 35mm is perfect for transfer to Blu Ray (though old films have a lot of grain which upset a lot of people who don't understand ).

Anyway, as for Family Guy. I'm surprised the 4:3 attitude is still going in the US. Do most people still have those monster 4:3 rear projection sets? !!. In Europe we went widescreen 15 years ago or so, even in SD, whilst the US were buying huge square TVs.

Has Seth not seen Futurama in HD on a widescreen HD TV?
