I can name more than four gangster films made by Scorsese: Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York and The Departed, with Raging Bull falling into a grey area. He also directed an episode and exec produced Boardwalk Empire...and The Irishman is due out in 2018. I would love to see him take on Scarface but it's not going to happen. I agree that he shouldn't be known only for the mafia genre, but he has a unique aptitude with it. Of course, he's a uniquely gifted director any way you slice it. As are the Coens.

Does Gangs Of New York really count? I mean Bill and his gang were more of a politically charged group than gangsters. Raging Bull features gangsters but isn't strictly about them. Still, I hope The Irishman doesn't get made. Scorsese has plenty of other projects in his lineup that sound far more interesting and cost-saving. I especially hate to see a Scorsese film on Netflix. Might as well see an Ingmar Bergman film on an iPhone.
