I don't think so but they had a similar 4k/3D/steel book planned release for Underworld: Blood Wars and that never happened.

That's probably because Blood Wars was an abysmal failure.

Is Universal really going to take a 10-year-old HD transfer and slap HDR on it?

When the UE came out on BD, people were disappointed the video was untouched.

The UE now costs $10 on BD, so this 4K marketing process will be fascinating.

I'm also not fully convinced WB will remaster the early HP movies for UHD either.

A 2K DI is not the same thing as some old HD telecine.

I'm assuming Kong has a DI and I would guess any movie with a DI will just be given an HDR pass and put out, yes. The whole point of DIs is to have a permanent and finished version of the movie, studios aren't going to like the idea of redoing them all. Especially when they were good enough for massive theater screens, so the idea of needing to improve them for the home is probably laughable to 99.9% of the population.

Also this is Universal we're talking about, so no matter the state of the master it's going to be re-used. No question about that really.

I think the Kong BD still looks amazing and should look amazing on UHD though.

Isn't this movie like 95% CGI? The CGI was likely 2K or close to it. Very little sense in having a 4K master.

Except for the wide colour gamut, increased bitrate for every last detail possible, HDR for more depth and dimensionality to the image, and so on and so forth.

Oh, I meant it was pointless to have a 4K DI or attempt to go back and do a proper 4K master, as a majority of the VFX was ~2K, and that was a majority of the movie. Of course I'd love a UHD HDR release of this one!

DTS: X Immersive Audio could be Universal code for DTS:X HR.

They may not know how to do seamless branching with lossless audio... unlike every other major studio. That seems to be Universal's MO on most discs like that.

So, the audio may not work correctly yet again.

Good spot. It wouldn't be beyond the realms that the master had a greater colour space than P3, custom gamuts were used as well as standardised ones, so maybe it's been mastered with actual Rec.2020 primaries instead of P3. OR it's just Universal's customary 'how random can we be with labelling our specs today?' thing popping up again.

But they can do branching with lossless DTS:X, we know that for a fact from the two Huntsman movies. Seeing as this is a long-ass movie and it's got several more foreign audio tracks on there than usual (Japanese and Portuguese along with French and Spanish, all in 768 kb/s DTS 5.1 I would assume) it wouldn't be a surprise if they lowballed the main audio as a result.

Seeing as the corrective firmware update from D&M doesn't seem to be any closer to fruition then yeah, this may end up being another DTS-HD HR 7.1 jobbie if the DTS:X is indeed lossy. At least the disc is a triple-stacker according to the cover, and thank **** for that given the lengthy running time of the film. I make that to be Universal's first 100GB disc.

If the typical modding mods are in typical modding mode, you typically won't get an answer. Some of my posts were also deleted for some reason.

I just bought the most recent Blu-ray last month myself. I had this nagging feeling in the back of my head that told me to just wait out for an eventual UHD release, but I bought the damn thing anyways.

Now look where we are. [emoji1] At least the Blu-ray only cost me $10.

If any movie gets a new 4k scan and comes out on bd it's good practice to wait several months to see if a 4k version will be released. Since we most likely have the existing blu it's easy to do. I'm not buying the new 4k scan of Wrath of Khan because at some point it will have a uhd release.
