Eh, suppliers have always tried to charge a premium to people who absolutely have to have something right now. If you don't want to pay current price for this release you can either way for a stand-alone BD release or wait for the price of this one to drop.

UHD has been out for over a year.

I think he means that without Dolby Vision discs, the format is still kind of a work-in-progress.

That's part of it. There's also the fact that the entire physical chain needs to be replaced. I'm not one of these people who turns over TVs every other year (and I replace projectors and receivers even more slowly).

And even if the format was completely settled and I decided wanted to upgrade all my hardware and I became completely sold on all the benefits of increased color space and dynamic range I'd still have to contend with the fact that a lot of the stuff I'm most interested isn't available in UHD and that's not likely to change anytime soon. If ever.

So while I'm hardly hostile to an evolving home theater environment I don't feel any particular sense of urgency when it comes to this round of upgrades either.

I agree with this. I am trying to hold off until I get an 4K OLED 60" or larger for under $2K. I have no interest in Atmos or DTS:X so all I need is the TV and the player.

Couldn't have said it better. I like collecting deep back catalogue titles and I don't see them coming out. I've been buying BD's for 10 years and still don't have all the titles I want.

And standard Blu-ray looks amazing on my setup.

Why hasn't this been officially reviewed anywhere yet? How does the PQ look on this UHD release vs the previous BR release?

Most people on my sci-fi forums say these exact words about DVD. "They look great on my setup! Who cares about BD?" At the end of the day we all have our "good enough" point I guess. I'll tell ya though, I was saying much the same thing a year ago but after you see a lot of UHDs you become a true believer. Even for catalog movies like Ghostbusters it makes for a very nice upgrade.

Tell that to Clint.

He has stated explicitly that he thought it was useful to remind people that gun control can be a kind of tyranny, by making the sheriff who hates gunmen a tyrannical sadist and all the rest.

He was annoyed at some state politician whose gun control policy got up his nose around that time.

Like I said. If you ignore that stated intent and some of the incongruities it throws up, the movie is wonderful.

People often like to enhance the situation of not having something (including intelligence) as some kind of virtue. Even on here you see people climbing over themselves to announce that they've immediately sold their extant copy of a film in anticipation of a better release announced for the near future. And even boasting that they got rid of the old one without any notification of an upgrade "I'm so glad I sold my etc, etc, etc....."

It's all about what looks good to the individual and what content the individual wants. I'm not saying UHD doesn't look good. It does. But until I start seeing older catalogue releases with a very noticeable improvement I'm sticking. I jumped to Blu-ray without hesitation because they released a lot of my favourite titles early on and the difference deteeen DVD and BD was very clear for me anyway. There is only a handful of UHD that I would buy right now so buying a new projector and new Oppo player isn't worth it at the moment (for me). I've always said that UHD is a great format for collectors who buy new releases but not so much for collectors who pretty much only buy back catalogue. But once and if they start then I know I will consider the upgrade. I think we should hug it out.

The top of the line LG OLED 65" W7P (which would be comparable to the new Sony I mentioned) is about $2000 more expensive.

2017 model. The 2016 model was $2700 at Sam's when I checked it a few weeks ago.

This is the first time EVER that I see Unforgiven absurdly reduced to being a pro-gun piece of propaganda, instead of being the sobering, melancholy re-assessment of the gunslinger mythos that has garnered enduring praise for over 20 years.

Despite being a Republican who's played a lot of gun-toting characters, Clint has often spoke in favour of certain gun control measures. I think he's one of those guys who is okay with guns as long as they're not in the "wrong hands" - he's certainly no Ted Nugent. So it would seem odd that he would make a film with that sort of message.

Lots of towns in the 'wild' west had no gun ordinances. I took more offense to the sheriff being overly uptight and displaying dead bodies than his lack of guns.

Clint hasn't been a Republican for decades BTW.
