And that's what my initial response to you was about... a response to that specific comment. You then went on some sales pitch to tell me how much better projection is and if I had only tried it, then I'd see the light.
Consumers such as yourself should be demanding a front projection system which is convenient and affordable. We all should. I have a 60" panel. It is tiny, especially for Scope. Even a reference OLED 90" with every bell and whistle and an image which exceeds what the human eye can perceive (and a lofty price tag and weighing a ton and necessitating pro delivery and installation) will present a relatively small Scope image.

It is hard to face inconvenient truths. It was for me. I'm simply an advocate for an ever better home theater experience for all of us. Sincerely.

It's tiny when compared to a typical commercial movie theater.

It's bigger than average when compared to a typical consumer television (which is what it is).

Geoffy, enjoy the new telly. Yer gonna have to rewatch all your UHDs on that ZD9 beast.
I've got a good memory (plus my posts on here) to reference when it comes to what I liked/didn't like about x UHD so I'm not gonna go on a huge rewatching spree, and I'm not gonna go mad watching lots of eyeball-melting HDR stuff either, it's the 35mm stuff and torture tests and marginal discs that I'll be looking at closely. I'll be making sure that the EOTF and the >1000-nit tone mapping is properly represented too before watching anything in particular. I've got my own meter and software to check calibration and 10k's vast input in the AVS thread is a place to start but he keeps contrast very, very high at the expense of some clipping because he thinks stuff is too dark with the contrast set any lower, but if it's tracking the PQ curve correctly at a lower contrast setting then it is what it is.

Gonna keep my thoughts to myself for a good few days if not weeks though because there will still be peaks and troughs re: setup that need negotiating so I won't be making any pronouncements until I feel I've got it properly dialled in. Hopefully it'll be in time for the UK release of Unforgiven....

THANK YOU.

I already consider my 65" obscene enough as it is, and I don't even sit that close to it.

Not all of us (and very few when it comes to people in general) want an actual movie theater in our home. That doesn't make our TVs "postage stamps". And I do genuinely find that comparison hilarious.

I'm not sure what your failing to understand. I'm not disagreeing that projection may be better. I'm not facing an 'inconvenient truth', so knock the elitism down a couple of pegs. I simply am content with what I have. That in no way invalidates what you've been saying. As far as what I should be demanding, that's up to me and how projection would work in my movie viewing space.

Most of us are enthusiasts of home theater here. We all have unique priorities when it comes to what makes the experience exciting. I'm simply sharing what I've experienced. I hope others take some time to contemplate the projected image in the home. Sure, it isn't an overnight thing.

I can assure you that 60" or 65" is small compared to 90"+ (and then we get to Scope aspect!). If more of us become convinced that the panel, irrespective of 4K OLED image quality, has come to its conclusion (for a variety of factors), then the sooner more can take the plunge.

Sony 65ZD9. As 'postage stamp sized' as it is, I'm just gonna have to grit my teeth and get on with it. Now, where's that magnifying glass?

You won't be hearing from me re: the TV for a good few days, I've previously had my ass chapped by blabbing all over the place about how awesome UHD is only for it to come crashing down around my ears as I realised my settings were fubar. I'll still be posting away merrily on here, just not about the TV.

Hahaha, If yours is postage stamp sized at 65 I dread to think how small my 55 will be.........

I am not knocking OLED or projection at all. If I could leverage that kind of money from the wife's icy grip I would own one. However it really does seem like HDR (or HDR 10 at least) was designed more around high-end LCDs. No near-black issues, much higher brightness. I think that's a factor in most pro-reviews and a lot of forum posts on the subject. That HomeTheaterForum thread on Unforgiven is just full of endless OLED circle-jerking, but they're all watching 4,000 nit masters on 600 nit displays with no dynamic metadata.
If they went back and did a new scan for this, as opposed to reusing the existing one, then it just didn't come out well in many cases, which is depressing. Other titles on film have come out with much better shadow details and overall image quality than this.

The only other display I considered seriously was the Z9D. Any non-Sony LCD has brighter highlights on test patterns, but with real-world HDR content they can't actually perform since doing so would cause massive blooming and wash out the shadows. I've been directly comparing the Sony A1E to their X900E LCD (which is here for review) this past week. The LCD does 900+ nits on test patterns, but in real-world content it is dimmer than the OLED and less saturated. The OLED is only 730 nits, which is a downside of course, but it manages to out-perform LCDs with higher nit levels. Again, the Z9D is the only LCD that would be under consideration for me because of brighter HDR output, but in the end I prefer the better low-level shadow detail the OLED can offer over the LCD today, and superior SDR performance.

Of course it is. No one is questioning the significance of the relative size difference. The issue is that you're using hyperbolic terms to refer to a typical home theater image size as exceedingly small. Your frame of reference is out of scale with that of the typical enthusiast, for whom a 60" screen is pretty average, not "a postage stamp".

If I see this at BB when I go to pick up my xXx Steelbook, I might be tempted to grab it rather than wait for a price drop. We'll see how my resolve holds up lol

Any consideration I had of front projection went out the window when HDR flew in. Every TV tech has its limitations and FP is no exception.

What the hell, Amazon! I've had this on pre-order for quite a while, and it still hasn't shipped. WB must have shortages.

I want Unforgiven bad but not $37 bad. I'm waiting for BB to lower their price since I have a $20 coupon I want to use.

The thread will revert to the topic more when it comes out and especially if the price comes down so more people will buy it.
