Why is the pre-order price so low with months left to go? This doesn't seem normal. Tempted to lock in a pre-order.

Just do it. You can always cancel it later anyway, if you change your mind.

On another note, just bought my ticket to see this again in a few hours. Hope I like it more.

Saw this in a Dolby Cinema and Imax.

The black were very good in DV, but not as inky and rich as when I saw Logan, and the 4k HDR 10 disc mirror that.

In the Imax screening, blacks were quite elevated in comparison (resembling a weak LCD backlight) I believe it was a DLP projector.

My guess is that Convenant's blacks will look as good as a DLP projector for blacks on an OLED, but not quite at the level of Logan, in DV or on an OLED.

I'm planning to watch it this weekend. Horror with aliens? Sounds bad ass too me. That's exactly why I prefer Alien over Aliens. Though Aliens is tough in its own rite. Obviously.

What I thought was damn impressive was the Atmos mix - what a cacophony of sound running along the walls, behind you and over you; in several instances the object based placement is wonderfully vague , you hear a sound but you can't exactly point to where you think it is - it's tricking the ear. Ridley and his sound team really amp up the aural experience.

You would think they would have released an Alien UHD boxset (containing all four previous movies) prior to Alien Covenant's theatrical release. Kind of what Universal did with the recent Mummy release.

Question

Do we even know yet if this movie was actually mastered in 4K? IMDb still has no specific information on the resolution it was filmed in and mastered at. From what I could discern in LieMAX, it doesn't look like it was mastered in 4K. I don't think Ridley has mastered any of his new movies in 4K yet so I'm not holding out hope for Alien: Covenant.

Nope.

I know Awakening is next. I thought there was only going to be one more after that one, besides Blomcamp's Alien 5... What are the other ones?

I was hoping this would be the case. I was going to pick up the bluray set because I haven't seen 3 and 4 but if the 4k is right around the corner, I don't want to be wasting money.

Saw it again, this time in Cinemark XD. I think it looked better than the AMC IMAX screening I went to last week. Blacks looked a lot better but they still weren't optimal. Having said that, there's a closeup of David
[Show spoiler]just before he shuts Walter down
where most of his face is obscured by shadow, and I remember seeing a bit more detail in his left eye in IMAX than I saw in XD. So maybe the XD version just darkened/crushed the blacks more. In any case tl;dr -- it looks better, but there may be detail lost. I'd like to see it in Dolby just for comparison's sake but twice in five days is enough. I'll just wait for the UHD.

He said he wasn't sure, maybe even only one more. Also with this having a disappointing box office I wouldn't even bet on one happening necessarily.

Ridley basically said in an interview Blomkamp's movie is dead.

I think the studio will evaluate Covenant succes (or lack of) to decide if Awakening is the final tie-in to Alien 1979 or do we get another one.
