Exactly! In the books everyone knew who and what the Seeker was, but knew only a post to be feared. It was never one of leadership, but used as a 'tool' or assassin. They even stated in the books that when there was a 'true' Seeker, all he did was seek the truth, not lead army or whatever. And what you are saying about people following him because he is Richard and I completely agree. In the books people hardly seemed to care that he was The Seeker unless he sliced off a few limbs or cut through swords (which he apparently cannot do in the TV show, the sword cutting part).

It is a shame what they are doing with Kahlan's character as I feel the actual actress is doing a good job being her and is getting misguided by the script. Oh and isn't funny how no one bows to the Mother Confessor or even state that she is her? I understood in the first book that Richard didn't know until later on that she was the 'Mother' Confessor until later. Though now after being in towns as how THE ENTIRE MIDLANDS know who the Mother Confessor is, it seems very odd how none of them recognize her right away and bow.

Side note, there are plenty of women in the Midlands with long hair and they are all allowed to use fire in the tv show.

I too remember reading about Terry stating that the TV show would be able to 'do more' than the book was able to. The example I remember reading about was showing how George Cypher crossed the boundary to steal the book of Counted Shadows and the battle between his and the beast guarding it. Yet there has only been 1 hint that this actually has taken place as when Richard threw the book into the fire and he just shrugged it off.

You mentioned the Map Maker and how they should of killed him. I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but that was Ted Raimi whom was Joxer in Xena as well as plays a role in all of Sam Raimi's movies and tv shows. I have a feeling that he will be appearing some more in the series.

Though I cannot wait until I see good ole Bruce Campbell appear in the series. I was hoping that he would be Chase, but I have a feeling he didn't want to be tied down to a role and wanted to persue his movie career.

I've been watching every week even if it's a bit hard to keep track on when the episodes are actualy playing, they just keep changing time and channel. I read all the books once but so far this series feel more like Hercules or Xena rather than the Sword Of Truth. It's not bad but it could be a little better.

I felt they did a horrible job explaining how Richard was able to suddenly fight so well with the sword. If I hadn't read the books I would just think

DON'T GET ME STARTED! Haha! Seriously, they are on the run from Darken Rahl and she is actually holding little judicial hearing for the people in the forest. . . . way to stay hidden!!!

Yeah, I noticed that too - however, in the big picture of the story, it never really mattered to the bigger canvas of the story - so, I don't mind too much.

Yeah, I recognized him - that's why I mentioned that I felt this show was pandering to the Xena/Hercules fans more the the "Sword of Truth" fans. Having Lucy Lawless host the preview for the pilot, having Ted Raimi play some silly mapmaker, etc.

It's really hard to believe that Goodkind is involved with the writing of this.

I am Montreal and it's not playing on any local channel, so far I got the first 3episodes from KTLA at like 9 pm my time then suddendly KTLA stop showing it. I was then able to find it on the Burlington Vermont ABC channel at 2 am for 1 episode then the following week it was not playing. I was able to catch it on Vermont NBC channel at 3 am. I've been checking on WGN cause I heard it's been playing there, I haven't see it once. I am one confuse watcher I tell you

It would be nice if they say something about the Sword of Truth having some sort of magical properties to it even if its poorly explained.

Oh yeah! All the Confessors being hunted by Darken Rahl and she announcing her presence literally everywhere by wearing the Mother Confessor Dress, but no one seems to notice. I also found it funny how she was having those 'meetings' this early in the series while they are being hunted.

I can see what you mean about the whole Hercules and Xena feel, but to give Hercules some credit, they did a pretty good job with incorporating greek/roman mythologies into the show. With comparision with Xena, I see what you mean as let me illustrate that for anyone whom hasn't followed the Xena series.

-Travel to a new town.
-Each town has a problem.
-Each town has a bad guy.
-Lesson is learned by the end of the show (literally every show).
-A miniscule amount of character development is shown but only by the end of the show.

Unfortunately I have to agree on this (unless we listen to commentary when its hopefully released on disc). It just seems like the writer for the show just skimmed through the book and take a few pointers from it and went from there.

Eventhough my statement sounds like the majority of most book adaptations, unfortunately its taken to an extreme in case of this show. It appears that the only thing thats consistent are the names of the characters and very vauge descriptions of them and what they do.

One thing I don't get.....if the old wizard (don't know his name) is Richard's Grandfather then does that mean Richard can use magic?

Richard wouldn't necessarily be able to use magic based upon that as its possible to skip a generation or so. He is able to use a magical sword (Sword of Truth) so its hard to say.

[Show spoiler]Apparently Playb3yond hasn't read the series, so from now on I'll try to keep my spoilers to a minumum. It would be a significaly (possible) spoiler if we let him know the truth.

I see. And since some of you guys have read the book....will Richard improve on his training as the seeker or is this as strong as he gets?

It is an issue that will come into question as the show goes on (if the show starts to go ANYWHERE close to the book - right now, I have no idea where they are going with so many changes and areas neglected.)

I will say this - the use of the Sword has magical properties (which I assume you've already figured out).

Also - when the question is answered (if kept within the story of the book) it is more than just a simple "yes or no" - which is good. There is a LOT to the story, if they tell it correctly.

I'll try to answer without giving too much of the story away.

Richard becomes very powerful with sword and magic.

I missed the first episode of the show. But my brother told me there was this book about what the Seeker can do or something like that and it got burned or something.

Again, I wouldn't want to spoil any of the big reveals and mysteries that are yet to come - just know there is a lot to the story that hasn't even been hinted at yet (which is why Mike and I are so disappointed so far.)

So, again, there is a lot more to come if you stick with the show. The Story grows - this isn't "it".

Good to know. Since I haven't read the book I don't know what to expect.

Does anyone know how many episodes were filmed for the first book? I think we are at like 4 or 5 episodes now.

You need to go watch it on Hulu or something right now, lol!

Its called The Book of Counted Shadows and so far according to the show, its the answer to how to stop Darken Rahl. And yes, Richard did burn it but when he did it, he didn't seem to care (HINT HINT ).

There was a book, "The Book of Counted Shadows" that Kahlan acquired and brought to the Seeker (who happened to be Richard). The Seeker was supposed to read it (although it was written in a very old lost language) and learn about a dangerous magical tool. When the soldiers broke through the boundry and were about to get them - Richard threw it in the fire to keep them from getting it. Of course, it is now lost to them as well.

Quote:

I will fill you in on this since they only mentioned one sentence in the first episode - they did a HORRIBLE job explaining this.

First of all - in the books, Richard was not able to use the Sword to defeat tons of people until the second book.

Second - one use of the sword is that all the "spirits" of the Seekers who used it before are "part" of the sword - all there knowledge of sword handeling, fighting is your's to use. Think about a hundreds of years of experience in fighting and swordplay being transferred to you. Of course, there is also more to the story - but it doesn't seem like the show is interested in the details.

I figured this wasn't much of a spoiler since he's already mowing down battalions in the pilot episode.
